Waterside House Tullynessle & Forbes

Post by tishgibbons » Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:33 pm

Hi all,

I have a Helen Mitchell a Cook at Waterside House in Tullynessle & Forbes in the 1871 census and I'm trying to track her down after that date. However I cannot find Waterside House in the 1881 census. Also would Waterside House have belonged to a large estate or a landlord who might have had estates elsewhere? This Helen Mitchell is one of my brick walls and is driving me up the wall too!

Hi Tish,

Waterside Farm is there in the 1881 census - very likely the same place. If you have the 1881 CDs, go to Search, then Neighbors - Advanced Query. Search for Waterside Forbes and you will get 8 results - Waterside Farm and its neighbouring cottages.

One disappointment - no Helen Mitchell.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thanks Andrew,

I don't have the CDs, struggling with SCotlandsPeople. Anyway if there's no Helen Mitchell I'll just keep banging my head off that wall.

Thanks

Hi Tish,

What was her age in 1871, and what was given as her birthplace?

One possibility...

Andrew,

she was born in Strathdon in 1846 but gives her age as 22 in the 1871 census. I was prepared to accept it was her though on the basis that there wasn't any other Helen Mitchell born in Strathdon around that time.

Hi Tish,

No obvious candidates on the "North of Scotland" CD. Four possibilities there - she married, she moved further away, she died, she is indexed wrongly. I would favour the marriage one as the most probable - do you have any clues to that one?

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Anderw,

No clues really. She had an illegitimate child in 1868. No father's name mentioned. I don't know if there's any significance in her calling him Charles; she had a brother and an uncle by that name. We had always been told that she had gone to Australia and her parents' poor relief records state that she was married. She was referred to as Nelly in those records but searching there has not got me anywhere. I haven't been able to trace Charles either. In 1871 he was with his grandmother Margaret Mitchell in Strathdon. It's so frustrating!
