Hi All
In doing my family research, I have examined about 30 marriage certificates and by far the majority of them seem to list the place of marriage as the same address as the Usual Residence. That to me suggests that these people were married at home?
Was the normal? Or am I missing something?
thanks

Hi David,
You'll find this was a very common thing, probably because the cost of a church wedding was beyond the means of most folk.
One of my families has a record showing that most of their children, grandchildren and even two great grandchildren were all married at that one address over the course of 50 years.

thanks for the replies. At least I know I am not going mad !
I'm having a great time tracing my tree and have managed to get back to 1730 but doubt I can get much further back as Parish records are rather vague as to parents, etc.
However I have lots to fill in now as previous generations seemed to have so many children. I already knew my grandfather was one of 15, but going back they were clearly breeding like rabbits in earlier generations too
Hopefully I can answer some questions on here too once I get my feet under the table on the TS.com!

Hi David. Welcome onboard.
Like yourself, I assumed that all marriages took place in church. it wasn't till I found my grandparents' marriage certificate, that I realised that they had married at my gran's home, Bellshill, 1926.
However, looking back a generation, when my grandfather's parents married, in 1900, they were married at the Congregational Church, Coatbridge. It might have been cost, or a choice to have a more intimate service, at home.

Hi David,
I too was a bit confused re the places my ancestors married and had come to the conclusion that church weddings may be a recent phenomena though perhaps as Mary suggests it was cost related.
However my Great Grandfather and all his siblings seem to have been married in various Glasgow Hotels though two of them were married at Burlington House. Does anyone know what this was? I can find no trace of it these days.

There seems to be a Burlington House at 183 Bath St, Glasgow, but whether this is the same building or not I couldn't say.
