With further regard to research into my grandfather James Comrie,b.1878 in Kilsyth. I am now trying to establish as much as possible regarding "George Geordie Sime" b.4/5/1703. He married in 1729 Helen Ruddach.b.1704 in Ordiquhill. George died at Is Col dOr Bourbogne,France' (no date I am afraid) I would love to know why he died. Their parents were George Ruddach and Elspeth Ruddach nee Innes. The Innes family trace back to Sir Robert Innes(1470-1551)who married Elspeth Stewart in 1510. The Stewarts being related to The Black Knight and back to Edward 3rd and beyond!!

Hi Jas
With further regard to research into my grandfather James Comrie,b.1878 in Kilsyth. I am now trying to establish as much as possible regarding "George Geordie Sime" b.4/5/1703
What is the connection between these two people?

Where have you found the info you have mentioned concerning George Sime and Helen Ruddach? I take it you have viewed the OPR entry?

I can see a George Syme christened on 5 May 1703 on IGI.
And a marriage which seems to be the one you refer to:
Spouse: HELEN RUDDACH
Marriage: 16 DEC 1729 Grange, Banff, Scotland
- but I have no way of knowing if they are the same George.

How do you know where George died?
Their parents were George Ruddach and Elspeth Ruddach nee Innes
I take it these are who you believe to be Helen's parents? There are two Helen Ruddachs b. 1704 on IGI - one with only father George mentioned , christened Sept 1704 in Ordiquhill and one Christened 3 June 1704 at Grange Banff. (pas. George RUDDACH & Issobell TALBERT)
How do you know for certain which Helen is the one who married George?

Where have you found the information about George Ruddach and Elspeth Ruddach nee Innes and the Innes line - can you fill us in a bit on how you have traced back to Sir Robert Innes(1470-1551) - what sources you have used?

We need a few concrete sources so we can get a solid handle on the people before we spend time looking into it in any depth.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks for your rapid response. Firsty being new to this site I will have to admit ignorance to a couple of things,What do "OPR" and"IPR" refer to please!! Secondly all my research and corresponding reults have come fron SP, Ancestry or "Family Search" the Mormon site. The info and possible linkages regarding William Comrie -Helen Sime-Helen Ruddach -Innes family-Elspeth Stewart and further has come mainly from Family Search. My family tree can of course be accessed at "Ancestry" The reference to "Geordies" death come from Family Search. All the other info has been gathered after many hours wading through both SP and the Mormon site. As regards the Innes clan, a lot of this came from the Net. Sorry to appear a bit vague, but I suppose a trip over the Border is called for before too long! Regards. Jas.

Hi Jas,

OPR = Old Parochial Register

These were the parish registers as kept by the Church of Scotland up to the end of 1854. Most of these are indexed on the IGI (International Genealogical Index - as found on the FamilySearch website). Digital images of the OPRs are available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Jas,

Just a wee word of caution about the search results on the Family Search site...

If the source is shown with the words "contributed by" or similar, rather than as from actual records then the contributor may be making "guesstimates" based on little more than similarities in surname, naming patterns and even just locations.

I only say this as I am not the only one who has been led astray, often setting research back months if not longer.

I learned to only ever use these types of entries as guidelines to be checked and double-ckecked before even accepting them as potential facts.
