Hello All,
I wonder if some kind person could do a look up of the 1851. and 1861. census for a James McCann, he was aged 40 years on the 1841. census Lanarkshire, and born in Ireland.
He would most likely be in the same area.
Regards,
Jonn.

Hi Jonn
Some of Lanarkshire is on Freecen - have you checked there? Do you know who he might be with e.g. is he married? Are there children?? His given occupation in 1841?
Have you tried a search on Scotlands People to see if there is a likely match?
Do you know he was definately alive in 1851?
Freecen (a free resource
) at http://www.freecen.org.uk has this guy in 1851:
Piece: SCT1851/644 Place: Gorbals -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 32
Civil Parish: Laurieston Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 618 Page: 12 Schedule: 42
Address: 15 Bedford Lane
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MCCANN James Head W M 58 Cowfeeder Ireland - -
MCCANN Rosana Dau U F 24 Ireland - -
MCGUIRE Ann Servnt - F 21 House Servant Ireland - -
MCCABE Matthew Lodger U M 40 Gate Keeper Ireland -
- a little older than you might expect, but 40 in 1841 could mean 44 or even older if was not sure of his age....
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jonn,
There are two James McCanns, born Ireland, age 40 in Lanarkshire in 1841 (and probably more if the spelling isn't exactly that). Which one is yours? The blacksmith at 87 Saltmarket Street, Glasgow or the Labourer at 23 New Vennal Shop, Glasgow? We need all the help we can get to find the right one.
Regards,
Sarah

Re: Census help please
Hello Lesley, Sarah,
The James McCann, i am looking for was the one 1841. aged 40 years a Blacksmith, living at 87 Saltmarket.
I am doing a little bit of research for a neighbour of mine, and was wondering if this James, survived up to 1855. then i could hopefully find a death record for him.
Regards,
Jonn.

Re: Census help please
Hi Jonn,
No sign of him in 1851 or 1861, unless he has changed occupations. Were the Catherine and Alexander who were with him in 1841 his children? No sign of them either... Could they all have gone back to Ireland?
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Census help please
Hello Sarah,
Thanks very much for checking the census for me.
Catherine McCann, went on to get married, and thats who my neighbour is directly related to he has all her information.
It looks like James McCann, has possibly died before 1851, and Alexander McCann, has vanished to.
Again thank you for looking.
Regards,
Jonn.

In that case you may be 'lucky'?. I had a wee look for any poorhouse applications for the family at The Mitchell yesterday and I'm pretty sure I saw a couple for Catherine McCann/McCann.
If you're not near Glasgow I can look again next time I'm there to see if it's her.
Regards,
Annette
