Evelyn G Miles

Post by trish1 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 12:57 am

I'm looking for the origins (or any other details) of Evelyn G Miles (maiden name not known)

1901 Census of England and Wales
Frederick T Miles 6 45 Old Windsor, Berkshire Head Dept manager in American Merchant's Office
Evelyn G Miles 28 Foreign Subj American, United States Wife
Frederick C Miles 16 Hornsey, London Son counting house clerk
Hugh W Miles 15 Hornsey, London Son
Claude T Miles 13 Hornsey, London Son
Dudley S Miles 12 Hornsey, London Son
Florence Strudwick 22 Clapton, London Servant Gen servant
26 Oakfield Rd Hornsey Middlesex RG13/1239 131 21

Frederick's first wife died in 1892. I have always assumed Frederick worked for Evelyn's father - could well be a wrong assumption. Frederick died in 1905.

My next sighting of Evelyn is 1908 travelling from New York to Liverpool age given as 30. I haven't found a trip from England to US prior to this??
I then find Evelyn in the 1920 US Census - West Hartford township - housekeeper for a family Schutz - age 40 - widow - born New York parents born New York
1901 age 28
1908 age 30
1920 age 40
She was probably younger than 28 in 1901 - raised the age to be closer to her husband. Every document refers to Evelyn G, so I think I have the right person

I can't find her on the early US Census records (which are somewhat new to me, so not sure of the best way to search) & know nothing about bdm records for New York. I assume I need a surname to get very far.

Hello, Trish,
This may add one little piece to your puzzle.

"I haven't found a trip to New York prior to this."

On the ellisisland.org site, there is Evelyn G. Miles arriving in New York from Liverpool on the Caronia, apparently by herself. Date of arrival 15 November 1908, age 32, widow. I tried to pull up the hand-written copy, which usually has additional detail, without success. By the way, it indicated that she was a saloon or first cabin passenger.

When added to your information, this indicates a short trip to the USA. Her ages are certainly all over the place, aren't they?

Regards, Mary Ellen

Hi Mary

I hadn't found that trip - I don't know many US sites to check, not having many folks who went there - so thank you for finding it.

The trip I found has her arriving in Liverpool from New York 5th August 1908
The trip you found has her arriving in New York from liverpool November 15 1908 - so as you say it was a quick trip.
Somewhere there has to be an earlier trip to New York as she was in England for the 1901 Census

The 1920 Census you found is the same as the one I found - many thanks for looking.

Here's the Nov. trip. Ancestry had her as Evelyn Niles instead of Miles. No new info on the original, but she is now 32.

Hi all,

Someone with Ancestry please look at the original of this one:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Evelyn Mills
Arrival Date: 6 Mar 1905
Estimated birth year: abt 1873
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: English
Ship Name: Caronia
Search Ship Database: View the Caronia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York

I'm reading the passenger above Evelyn as Miles, Fred Thomas age 48. There is a notation in the margin: died. They have both Fred and Evelyn as English, but that could be a simple mistake. Their destination is H. W. Peabody, 17 State St., New York.

That's a great find Carol :D :D :D (I'll have to start using wild cards on Ancestry)

It would seem they planned the trip to NY but Frederick died & Evelyn went alone - This is my transcript

Miles Fred Thomas 48 M M Mechut??(his Occupation was Merchant) R&W British English, London Eng, NY, paid for self, never before in US
Address c/- HW Peabody &C 17 State Street New York

SO - was Evelyn Miss Peabody?? and

Where did they marry - as I can't find a marriage in England - Scotland? Gretna Green? Then again, maybe they didn't marry? or maybe more transcript errors?

She does seem to be confused about her age!

Trish

Actually - the death I have (which I wasn't 100% sure of) was Dec Qtr 1905, so he died on board - I was thinking he died before the trip. I have a friend who can check the "outside UK" deaths, so will send him an email. And I just saw the note at the bottom of the page - buried at sea March 3 - how very sad

Hi Trish,

Wildcards help, but I've just gotten used to using creative searching because of the transcription errors. I was just looking for H. W. Peabody in New York too, but got bumped off line--we have dial-up and my husband had to make a phone call--the nerve!

I was wondering about the marriage too. I couldn't find one for Frederick in England, but who knows? It would be interesting to see his death certificate if you can find that. I thought it was interesting that he died on March 3rd just two days out of New York and yet was buried at sea. I wonder if that was his or Evelyn's choice. Surely, by 1905 an ocean liner would have some provision for keeping a body for two days? But then again, I don't know much about that subject!

Received your PM too. Yes, those questions at the end are something else. My great grandfather probably would have been questionable for admission--he was crippled--never mind that he was tough enough to survive having half his right arm amputated with no anesthetic after an accident at the grain mill where he worked. He lived for another 40 years or so and supported nine kids in Finland!

I noticed that Evelyn was 32--again! :o

Hi Trish,

One more thing: When I looked at the original passenger list again, the destination looks like Hw. Peabody & C. so maybe Howard Peabody and Company? Might find it listed in one of the directories.

Hello all,

The death on board is mentioned in the NY Times.

H. W. Peabody & Co. appears to have been in the Import/Export business with branches all over the world.

Hugh Warren Miles appears to have married an interesting girl. Her story makes interesting reading, especially his demise, and:

“Hugh was born at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Park, and had received his education as a Bluecoat Boy at Christ's Hospital. His stepmother, whose maiden name was Evelyn Galt, was a sister of the wife of the President Wilson.”

Hope that’s useful,
