1901 census Charles Bruce Aitken 1868

Post by kazz » Thu Mar 18, 2010 6:23 pm

Hello,
i have been searching my Aitken family for ages,
i have a problem with the 1901 census...

my g grandad's first marriage
Charles Bruce Aitken 1868-1942 m Amelia Louise Mason 1873 – 1912
in 1895, they had 1 son (as far as i know)
Charles John Bruce Aitken 1896-1902 Bute, Scotland

this is the 1901 census
6, sutherland st, Lanarkshire

Chas B Aitken 32/head absent son (head)
Officer Mercantile Marine

Amelia L Aitken 28/daughter in law

Chas JB Aitken 5/grandson

Margt Aitken 20/daur
Alfred AJ Hall 31/son in law
Capt HLI Res of officer
Eleanor J Hall(Eleanor J Aitken) 30/daur
spouse Alfred AJ
father Chas B
Tenoar MJ Hall 4/gran daur
father Alfred AJ
mother Eleanor J
Jno Mason 25/visitor

ED 14
Roll CSSCT1901_333

i have searched for this document on Scotlands People and spent a fortune,
i cant find it!
On Ancestry you cant see the original doc, im sure there must be
errors on the transcript as nothing seems right!
How can Chas B Aitken age 32 have a daughter aged 20?
Why is Amelia Aitken is down as daughter in law to the Head
when i have their marriage cert?
nothing seems right, i need to see the original doc, having spent 48quid already on Scotlands People i dont wish to keep spending money with no results.

so any help would be great, is there an easier way to find this doc?
i have all the info and i dont mind paying for the RIGHT one, lol

thanks, kaz, x

Hi Kazz,
That is an odd one. It seems (to me) that Chas B Aitken, Margt Aitken and Eleanor J Hall are all children of the absent Head. Do you know if they are siblings?

All the best,
Sarah

Ah yes, I see in 1881 that they are siblings-- big family!

1881
44 Hillhead Street, Partick, Hillhead, Lanarkshire
Thos A Aitken, 42, Head, born Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Secretary & Manager of Oil Co Sim Of
Jane S Aitken, 39, Wife, born Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire
Thos A Aitken, 17, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Commercial Clerk
Charles B Aitken, 12, Son, born Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scholar
Eleanor I Aitken, 10, Daur, born Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scholar
Mary A Aitken, 8, Daur, born Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scholar
James Mc I Aitken, 6, Son, born Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scholar
Jane M Aitken, 5, Daur, born Greenock, Renfrewshire
William S Aitken, 4, Son, born Greenock, Renfrewshire
George E Aitken, 1,, Son, born Hillhead, Lanarkshire
Margaret Aitken, 2 Mo, Daur, born Hillhead, Lanarkshire
Margaret Murray, 20, Sister-in-law, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Mantle Maker
Sarah Black, 19, Servant, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Domestic Serv General
Catherine Leisk, 21, Servant, born Burra Island, Shetland, Domestic Serv Nurse

So it seems that the house in 1901 belonged to the father (or mother) who was thus the "head," but he or she was absent on census night. Doesn't help you find it on SP, but explains the problems you found with the transcription.

Back again after searching the 1901 census on SP. You're right-- I don't see any of that household in the index. Even those with easy surnames like "Hall" :?

Definitely worth a contact form to SP-- you have wasted enough credits on this one! Let's hope they refund some of them to you [-o<

All the best,
Sarah

Nope doesn't seem to be there right enough. I even searched for the neighbours at No. 4 and No. 8 but they don't appear to be indexed either.

Thank you very much Sarah an Annette, x

yes they were a big family, Thomas Alexander Aitken died 20/09/1893,
so the mother (head) Jane S was absent, i thought maybe she re married but then she would not
be the head anymore, perhaps she was in Hospital.
ive practically given up with SP lol ill see if i can find her on ancestry.

I will add any more info i find just in case anyone else is searching the same family,

thank you again for your help,

kaz, x

I won't spoil it for you in case you haven't seen it but I nearly choked on my cup of tea  when I saw Ancestry's transcription of Jane's father's occupation in 1871!!

Annette :!: Pull yourself together, girl! Before you collapse in private mirth, please clarify for us curious, but muddle-headed folks, who in the world is Jane's father?

I went and checked her marriage to Thomas Alexander Aitken in the IGI to see what her maiden name was and saw that it was Murray. No obvious birth in Port Glasgow, however. So where are you finding her father's name in order to check :?:

Having lots of trouble with Ancestry tonight-- doesn't want to let me go from page to page without trying 4 or 5 times at each step :?
(My excuse for being thick headed) :-

Regards,
Sarah

Later: Whew! Finally got there I think... Was he James, age 55 in 1871, born Castleton, Roxburghshire?
