I'm on holiday in Dumfriesshire this week and staying at an old mill.
The mill itself has been converted into a house and we are in the Millers House alongside - absolutely great place - enormous garden with bowling green and tennis court [not advertising but I can recommend =D> ]
Anyway, my 'history' brain can't be turned off and I'm fascinated by the history of this place. The owners - Sir Somebody - have a few bits of information pinned up in the house, but it only tells who owned the place , not who lived there.
I have looked at freecen, but can't seem to find a miller living here in 1841 or 1851.
Can anyone suggest a way to find out ?
I'm using my husband's laptop, so all my bookmarked sources aren't at my fingertips ....
I gather that it used to be called the Mill of Kirkpatrick Durham but changed to the Mill of Lochpatrick in the 1770's
The last owners mentioned on the board are David Dundas Wingham who sold it to Thomas Walton Campbell of Walton Park in November 1858.
It was a working mill up until after WWII, and used as farm buildings until restored and turned into a house in the 1960/70's
To put it in geographical context :
Kirkpatrick Durham is just north of Castle Douglas, the mill is just north of that.

Anyone help satisfy my curiosity?

Sounds a great place to stay Wilma - hope the weather's good too.
Looking at an old map of the area shows it as Lochpatrick Mill (Corn) but inserting Lochpatrick Mill at Ancestry give no results. Hopefully somebody else will come up with something.

Hello Wilma,
There’s nothing worth mentioning in the 19C newspapers except maybe this article.
Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh), Friday, April 9, 1858.
SALE OF LAND.—The lands of Lochpatrick, in the parish of Kirkpatrick-Durham, and Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, have been purchased from the trustees of the late Robert Whigham, Esq., Sheriff of Perthshire, by John Fergusson, Esq., of Kilwhanity, and Thomas W. Campbell, Esq., of Walton Park, for the sum of L.9400, which is about thirty years’ purchase on the present rental.
According to the Caledonian Mercury, Robert Whigham died 7 March, 1849, at Great King Street, Edinburgh, age 79. There’s occasional mention of him as Robert Whigham of Lochpatrick but no mention of his tenants.
All the best,
Alan
p.s. I just noticed that FreeCen doesn't appear to have any data for 1851 Dumfries-shire, unfortunately.

Hi Wilma,
The 1881 census implies that the cottage may have been the smithy - based on the addresses that were enumerated. It looks like the enumerator came in from the north-west and left by the north-east (not going down the road to the south at that time).

Wow thanks for all that, plenty to puzzle over tonight once the bairns are in bed.
Andrew, the smithy is the wee cottage across the road beside 'our' tennis court, it's still occupied.
this one has definately been built and used as a house as it's got lots of the original features.
Now I'm off to enjoy the sunshine, maybe Threave castle today.
