1841 Cenus

Post by kenspeckle » Sat Mar 19, 2011 4:36 am

Can anyone please help I have a record that I found on Ancestry 1841 census of my gggg gran but no matter what I enter I can not get it on Scotlands People 1841 census. What I am trying to find out is the birthplace of Mrs Combs (actually Elizabeth Combe nee Lyal on the marriage doc 1813 both of East Greenock or Lyall spelling in newspaper announcing her death Elizabeth Lyall widow of Capt George Combe died at Greenock 27/12/1843 (Greenock advertiser 29/12/1843) I can not pin her birth on LDS and as it says b Scotland on Ancestry Census she may have not been born in Renfrew and only looking at the census record will confirm this I also tried the lodgers names and again no record found for Greenock and only 1 Combe in Lochwinnoch Renfrew
I am stumped !

When ancestry lists it as "born Scotland" for the 1841 census that is their translation for "not born in the county". As the Census county is Renfrew - this means she was born in some other county of Scotland. If the record was YES for Born in county place of birth would say Renfrewshire.

I haven't seen the image, and would thus be assuming it says Born in County NO - but it would be worth finding the actual image to check. My 12 remaining SP credits expired last week

Then again a little weird - If I search for Agnes combs aged 13 to 15 also in household Janet - I get one hit - but if I search Renfrew county only, or Greenock only I get zero hits.?? To check - guess I'll add some credits - can use them next month for the census :D

Top of the image is 1841 Combs, Agnes Census 1841 564/00 052/00 003 Parish Middle
Image header says Greenock Renfrew
For born in county - Mrs Combs says No - the children all say Yes, Mr Brown says No

BUT the index on SP says district Airdrie County North Lanarkshire

Someone else will understand wherein is the error better than myself - it would seem SP has an incorrect County/district perhaps - in which case, if you have lost credits searching they will usually refund same

Hi Trish
thank you so very much for looking at this for me Its definitely the correct family Wm Brown was born in Anstruther Fife and all the children were born in Greenock East Parish

BUT they never were in Airdrie so SP have made a booboo there ! no wonder I could not find them I did not think of trying out of Renfrew as sooo many Combes are in Midlothian where the majority of them hailed from ...... can you email them and get that credited to you ? I did not mean for anyone to spend money on it Can I please do something for you let me know your brick walls I will see what I can find I have Aussie Cds on BDMs plus Scottish Church records CD has a lot that is not on LDS web plus access to newspapers or give me one you want record for on SP and I will get it and email to you .....again many thanks Lesley in Tassie

Hi lesley - I just went looking while you were replying

According to the parish list from Scotland GRO
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/l ... ricts.html

All of Greenock (including Greenock Middle) is parish number 564 - Aidrie is only listed from 1855 and was then number 651, but today is given as RegDist 564 - perhaps therein lies the error - which I am sure AndrewP can fully explain. Greenock is given as 640 RD in current times.

Trish

Edit: no worries about the credits - I couldn't help myself wanting to check - and the 12 were just "hanging around expired" :D
Being able to add the name of someone else in the family is a useful way to limit the search - especially when you have a transcription.

Hi Lesley & Trish,

I have now reported this to my contacts at SP for their attention. It occurs in both 1841 and 1851 censuses - 564 (Greenock) is showing up as Airdrie, North Lanarkshire. The same error occurs for 573 (Paisley) which is showing up as Cambuslang, North Lanarkshire for the 1841 and 1851 censuses.

All ther best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew

I was quite puzzled not being able to find the record on SP and was very hesitant on going Scotland wide on my search as the surname Combe / Comb surname is very big in Edinburgh & East Coast only my few in Greenock area and nothing had come up either with the lodgers, and I had it in my head that definitely Greenock Renfrew, there is another family in Glasgow that I think could be connected but have never been able to tie the knot
I know that when it says b Scotland that it means not born in the county of the census but I really wanted to see the original record to be sure that it was correct and not a mistake in transcription, often you can go by Ancestry but anything in doubt I always go to SP for the original ,
So Trish was a great help in opening that one record out of county which was them !
best regards Lesley

Andrew - that is so interesting - while I was searching for Lesley, I went back to some of my own old searches (which were in Renfrew) and they came up as nothing found, which made me wonder if there was an issue with all of Renfrew - my folks came from Paisley - so perhaps you have answered another question for me. My searches were for baptisms - not the census however - I will look at them again.

many thanks for all you do

Trish
