1851 Census Problem

Post by demonxanth » Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:55 am

I have a transcription of the 1851 Census from Ancestry for James McEwing and family in Paisley but cannot find it on Scotlandspeople. I have tried every combination I can think of including no surnames at all. Any ideas or is is possible to find records by address? I don't expect to get any more information but I would like to look at the original certificate.

Colin

Hi Colin,

They are there, but hidden behind an SP error (reported to SP a while back). Many of the Paisley 1851 census results are showing up as Cambuslang. I searched for Maria m*ew*n, aged 8 to 10, with Martha in the same household and found them.

1 1851 MCEWAN MARIA F 9 SOUTH LANARKSHIRE (CAMBUSLANG) /SOUTH LANARKSHIRE 573/00 027/00 006

However, when you view the page it is unreadable. Like quite a few 1851 census books, blue ink on blue paper, then microfilmed (black & white), then digitised, produces soemthing that appears to have little writing on it.

Once you have viewed that, you can report it to SP, who will re-scan it for you and e-mail a good copy to you.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks very much. I had found that entry but made the fatal assumption that Cambuslang was wrong (didn't read the GROS data field!!). Just goes to show that you can't assume anything.

Thanks again.
