lost reynolds child
Hi I hope someone can throw some light on a puzzle for me. On the 1901 census entry for the family of my great-uncle James Reynolds there is an entry for a Rose Reynolds, daughter, aged 2 years, born in Dumbarton. I have searched the Birth Records for the town and even contacted the local Registrar but no Rose Reynolds was born there between 1898 and 1901. I was unsuccessful also in finding a Marriage or a Death Certificate for this child and waited with high hopes for the 1911 census. But she does not appear with the family on that census return. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Hi miw
...and welcome to Talking Scot.
Can I ask where you have seen Rose mentioned in the census - is it on a digital copy of an original census page, or is it a transcription?
Best wishes

Re: lost reynolds child
The 2 year old Rose appears in the 1901 census as the daughter of James REYNOLDS, Brassfinisher, and Matilda, at 16 Clyde Street in Dumbarton. Matilda was born in Ireland.
James REYNOLDS and Matilda JONES married in Dublin in 1887. This would suggest the possibility that Rose, or cognates such as Rosein etc., was born in Ireland, but doesn't immediately explain the absence of a mention of her in the 1911 census, unless, of course, she was back in Ireland at the time.......

Things certainly move quickly here. Lesley - I read the census record on the digros system at the genealogy centre at Park Circus in Glasgow. mb - I did wonder about the Irish connection but found it a little strange that her 3 sisters were all born in Dumbarton and the family lived there at the same address for all their married life. But I will certainly do a bit of digging in that direction now. Thank you very much, both of you. Maureen

Hi,I know its been a awhile since you made your post and I hope you traced baby Rose. I too know of the Reynolds from Dumbarton my great great aunt Mary Reynolds (nee Sweeney)older sister of my Great grand mother married John Reynolds of Dumbarton in 1897.According to the 1901 census these Reynolds lived at 13 Clyde street,so if not related they must have known each other! What Iam trying to do at the moment is find my great grandmothers grave but thats another story you will see in my other posts,I just found Mary Reynolds at Dumbarton cementery yesterday but she is in with her parents and not the Reynolds family....soooooooooo come Monday I am going to phone the people who deal with creamations and burials with John Reynold date of death and see if my great grandmother is in with them.I am suggesting that if you have a date of death for Roses father or even grand father then you might find a lair with Rose in it.Phone west dunbartonshire council at 01389 737000 and they will pass you to the right department once you have the lair details then you go and speak to the fab grave digger guys at Dumbarton cementery and they will show you to the grave. Its worked for me and everyone at the council and at the cementery have been amazing .Hope this helps.Anne xx

Sweeney in Dumbarton
I have a family of Annie Sweeney who I beleive has older siblings of John, David, Mary and Charles all born in Ireland and living in Dumbarton. Their parents are Denis Sweeney and Mary Boyle. Charles married my great grand aunt, Mary Jane Moan in Alexandria, Dunbartonshire in 1884 and then emigrated to the USA. Charles died in the USA and Mary Jane Sweeney returned to Dumbarton with 4 young children about 1898. Jane then had twins out of wedlock with a David Sweeney in 1899. I think that this was Charles younger brother. Mary Jane did not remarry and remained a widow until her death in Renton in 1939. Is this the same Sweeney family ?

Yes Iam delighted you have joined! Just to say I have checked out Denis Andrew Sweeneys DC and as I thought it has to be ordered from SP in order to be seen.
