Alexander Brannan (Brannen) Census 1861/1871

hello everyone frae Canada,

here is Maggie64, I have not been on talkingscot for longtime, but I am writing you a note that I need your big help that I would like to know where was Alexander Brannan on census 1861 to 1901.

I know that he was born in 1833 in Montrose, his parents Edward Brannan and Isabella Rae, I only found him on census 1841 and 1851. I can't find him on census 1861 to 1901.

I do not know if he died before 1861 or he was disappeared somewhere or gone at Sea as seaman who knows?

I tried to look up on his death entry at Scotlandspeople Register House online but no luck. I have no idea if he moved away from Montrose when he got older. Please help me out with this one.

I've had a look on the census records and like you I can't find him either, but will keep looking for you. I did find him on a Seamans Crewlist for 1851.

Thank you Roy for provided me the information on Alexander Brannan from seamen census 1851...

I am not sure if it was really him that he went away as seaman at that time.

Any chance do you have seaman census for year 1861 ???

I only got for

Census 1841
Alexander Brannon was listed that he was born Angus, Scotland
he lived at North St S Side in Montrose with his parents Edward and Isabella (Isobel)

Census 1851
Alexander Branen was listed as seaman (app) aged 18.
born Aberdeen, they lived at 8 Queen Street, Montrose.

I dont know which is exact birthplace for Alex.. Angus (Montrose) or Aberdeen.
but I know that my ancestors did lived in Aberdeen for awhile before they moved to settle down in Montrose later in 1830's after my ancestor Edward was discharged from 88th regiment army in Ireland in 1822, they decided to settle down in Scotland (Isabella was from Dunnottar not far from Stonehaven).

It looked like Alexander Brannan disappeared somewhere at sea who knows! but let me know if you find anything thank you for your help much appreciate it very much.

When was seaman census 1851 taken? are they taken at same time as census 1851? or different time?
how do you get information on seamen census? where? online? or visit Family History Society? u are lucky but I am stuck in Canada with limit information ahhh.

Hello Margaret,

I’ve been looking around in the old newspapers for anything at all and getting absolutely nowhere.

The details Roy gave you were from employment records of the vessel Scotia. Crew lists and similar documents were made up on a regular basis and were a record of who was or had been a member of the crew of a merchant vessel. It’s nothing to do with a census.

Crew list indexes are being digitised by various organisations but I’m not sure who’s got what at the moment. FMP have some and you can read about crew lists there. http://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/clip-crew-lists

On this page you’ll find a section regarding the Merchant Navy and the census. For 1861 it seems to be saying that if a foreign trade vessel (like the Scotia) wasn’t in a UK port between 25 March and 7 April its occupants would have missed the count. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hitch/gendocs/census2.html

I will not give up looking for Alexander to find out what was happened to him. I will check out later on. Thanks a million.
