How to find German relatives?

Hi All
Am new to Talking Scot forum so not sure if I could have have found this info elsewhere on the site (I have looked, honest).
My 3xgreat G'father was born in Danzig in Germany, at least that's what it look like on the census. His father was a merchant seaman and as Danzig is on the Baltic Sea I'm hoping I have deciphered the info correctly. Does anyone know how I can trace the German link please?
