Just found out "Lost Cousins" are letting us view the 1901 census England & Wales FREE for the month of September.

I don't really think they are

It's the same offer that was mentioned before from Ancestry.com , in fact you have to register with Ancestry and it's only to search the index not view the records.

You can search the records anytime by going to the official 1901 census site :

http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Not as good as it sounds I don't think!

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk has a direct link to there too, bypassing Ancestry.

Yes, I just used it for quite a while. You access it through "Lost Cousins", which is free and on the Home page, right hand corner is the access.

You get to see the family etc. but anything else you have to pay for.
Try it again.

It is free on www.ancestry.co.uk and you DONT have to sign up or give your credit card details. And you can view the images. I have tried - although i dont need to as i have a subscription - just to prove it ! They must be doing a huge PR thing to get more people to sign up to the likes of Genesre ect...........

Am I doing something, or reading these offers incorrectly? I've tried, but seem to get nowhere in searching for known family living in Scotland during this time. I know it says 1901 England and Wales census, and that Scotland has kept its own records, so where will I find information, if not on Scotland's People for 1901 census.

I'm just starting out with very little information and seem to be making very little headway.

Thanks,

Frances

Hello Frances

As you said its only for England and Wales so Scotlandspeople IS as far as i know the only place to view Scottish census in full 1871-1901.
If you are looking for someone born in Scotland who may be living in England you will find them on English census. Can you not find who your looking for on S/P ?

Thank you Tracey, for your reply and for confirming that I just wasn't missing something in the offer of free access.

I have located some helpful information using Scotland's People to narrow down my approach before I actually sign up, so that I can have my questions clear in my mind before I tackle the live databases.

Thanks. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions in no time.

Hello Frances

What area are you searching in ?
If you are looking in Moray www.moray.gov.uk may have information on your family. You can search and look for free then go to scotlandspeople when you have more of an idea instead of throwing ( well thrown in the end though that £6 could well be the best £6 you ever spent !) money guessing on S/P then download the certificate or census.
Im a huge fan of the Moray site with its new look and more viewable information it has helped me restart one side after a long stalemate. :D

Good luck and if you need help getting started there are lot of people here more than willing to help with that first push in the right direction

Again, thank you Tracey. Grandparents all lived in Glasgow, so I will begin with the 1901 census.

Brother is arriving today so we'll put on our thinking caps and kick off at Scotland's People. It will help that he is here, as I am so easily distracted by interesting tidbits when researching.
