Caledonian Railway in Aberdeen 1861-1891
I believe the Caledonian Railway had a station at Guild Street in Aberdeen during mid-late 19th century but does anyone know if they had any other locations that could have employed people as a porter or wagon greaser? My gt gt grandfather Robert Smith worked for them and retired in Aberdeen on a pension at the end of the century. He lived at various locations around central Aberdeen including Craigie Street, Woolmahill and Blackfriars Street.

There were engine works at Inverurie but that was the Great North of Scotland, later LNER. The Caley became the LMS.

It looks like Guild Street had previously been a Scottish NE Railway facility, though both it and the CR are existing together in the subsequent city directories for Aberdeen?

Hello Ron,
Aberdeen Stations.

It seems there were Caledonian Railway Engine Sheds at Ferryhill.

“Caledonian Railway, Aberdeen Signal Bridges”

If they had their own signal bridges did they have their own line into Aberdeen? If so, maybe it is labeled on a map and any offshoots from that would lead to Caledonian facilities. http://maps.nls.uk/towns/index.html#aberdeen
There’s a report in the Aberdeen Weekly Journal, Saturday, December 22, 1888, of a fatal accident which occurred on the Caledonian Railway at Ferryhill Station Aberdeen. A locomotive superintendent was crossing the lines leading to Ferryhill Engine Shed on his way home for dinner. I’ll spare you the gory details.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks for those really useful links Alan.
Both the main station and Ferryhill are close to where my gt gt grandfather ended up living in Aberdeen. I am thinking he may have worked at Ferryhill later on as his home seemed to shift in that direction around retirement.

Hi Allan
The accident you were referring to wasn't a gent by the name of Mc/MacDonald by any chance.
I have an ancestor who worked and was killed at Ferryhill
Yours Aye

Hello Bruce,
No, it was a fellow by the name of William Findlay, he lived at Deebank Cottage. He was over 60, married, left a widow and grown-up family, and came from Montrose about two years previous.
All the best,
Alan
