Trying to trace parents of John McSevney born 12th December 1916 in Glasgow. Parents were Mathew and Isabella McSevney. Believe Mathew was born circa 1891 in Milton Lanarkshire but have not been able to confirm. Have searched Scotlands People but cannot find a marriage between a Mathew McSevney and an Isabella. Any help would be most welcome.

Re: John McSevney
Hello Elna,
This looks like the family in 1901. Is it possible that you have jumped a generation in your information? Of course, it is perfectly possible that Matthew, the son of Matthew and Isabella also married a woman named Isabella.
1901
4 Thorn Street, Partick, , Govan, Lanarkshire
Matthew McSevney, 39, Head, born Tarbolton, Ayrshire, (Commissionaire) Gateman
Isabella McSevney, 39, Wife, born Ginns, Ayrshire
John McSevney, 13, Son, born Ireland, Scholar
Maggie McSevney, 12, Daur, born Partick, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Matthew McSevney, 10, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Agnes McSevney, 7, Daur, born Partick, Lanarkshire, Scholar
James McSevney, 5, Son, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Hellen McSevney, 3, Daur, born Pollokshaws, Renfrewshire
Isabella McSevney, 1, Daur, born Partick, Lanarkshire
Notice by the children's birth places that they moved around regularly, including to Ireland (John's birth).
All the best,
Sarah

Re: John McSevney
I think Sarah could be right.
There is a likely marriage between a Matthew Stewart McSevney and a Margaret Ross/Hamilton/Simpson in 1912 at Partick.
Regards,
Annette

According to the IGI Matthew's (born 1891) mother's surname was McCann. A look at the entry on SP will show where his parents married.

Birthplace: Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Father's Name: Matthew Mcsevney

A search there also shows a pension record indexed for a Matthew Stewart McSevney born 1862 - the same year of birth as the 1901 census for Matthew senior.

Re: John McSevney
It would appear the McSevney family originated in Northern Ireland and settled in Ayrshire in the early 1800`s.
The spelling varies from McLavery, McSephnie, McSephney, McSaveney, McSeveney and so on. I found a McSevney with an Adams Ewert. I thought this may be Adam Stewart but the census states female. So if any one knows of this Adams Ewart please let me know.

Re: John McSevney
Hello,
I am the great niece of John McSevney. He was my grandfather's older brother. I am actually sitting with his step daughter, Patsy Kerr. John was actually born on the 12th December 1912, not 1916. his parents were Matthew Stewart McSevney and Margaret Simpson. His Paternal grandparents were Matthew McSevney and Isabella McCann. my grandfather, John's brother, was Daniel McCann McSevney. There were 14 births in To john's mother and 11 survived infancy. There is only one living sibling, Robert Ross McSevney, who lives in Hamilton Ontario, Canada.
John was married to Lilly Broadbent and had one son. They divorced either during or after the war and then he married Polly Austin who had 3 children, Lily, John and Patsy. John and Polly then had a son, Thomas, who now lives in Canada.
Sorry, I just re read your post and it looks like you are trying to find out more about John's parents, not. John.
Well, Matthew and Margaret were John's parents. They were my mum's grandparents. I know a bit about. Margaret who was a. Simpson. Her mother was married 3 times. First to a Ross and they had several children. I can dig out my information to find out their names. Then she married a Simpson and had 3 children, Margaret and Archie and I can't remember the third Simpson child's name. Then she married a Holmes and they had Annie and Rebecca and possible a son. They lived in Duntocher.
I remember my pop telling me that his grandfather McSevney, Matthew, was a career soldier and had been in the army for over 20 years. They had a house in Rothesay. They were catholic and wanted my pop to join the priesthood.
I will try and dig out some of the information I have gathered over the years from talking to my great aunts and uncles.
I hope this helps.
