HELP WITH ALEXANDER WADDELLS DEATH CERTIFICATE.

Post by joette » Mon Sep 19, 2005 1:24 pm

I have been re searching for my GGrandfathers Death Certificate.Yes I have seen it, my Mother has seen it at St Andrews &New Register House respectively. We have both "mislaid" our original material(I have started calling my Mothers House the Bermuda Triangle). She is unwell at moment & is in too much pain to confirm details with me but my recollection is that the entry we saw for the certificate the christian name was obliterated (you know what happens when you rub too hard with an eraser ?- it looked exactly lik that.)
I am trying to confirm his place of Birth. I have looked at most of the Death Certificates for that period(circa1870 in Edinburgh) for Alexander Waddell but cant find it. If the christian name is obliterated as we recall would it be indexed under what??? Ive tried just **Waddell but with no success. He was accidentally poisioned by the chemist so it is an unusual cause of death would it have had some sort of inquiry into it? How the heck would they have known thats what happened :? :? My knowledge of
their PM skills in that era is miniscule

Cathy thank you so much this is him Alexander Waddel of Dollar.I started my search at 1868 as I thought 1867 was too early  Now it has posed more questions than answers.
Why is the certificate different to the one we saw before-did we see someone elses with the same dead wifes name, why when he had children did a neighbour report Death.I forgot age of majority was 21 then & I am not sure of ages of my GGrandparents siblings but he was only 11 & his brother 8. What age could you report a Death at,I am supposing 21.They only guessetemeted his age I thought he would have other adult aged relatives around but maybe not. No Mothers name and I suppose that Fathers name is a guess too.So I cant try to find his parents oh weel there is always the 1861 Census.

Hi Joette,
just a quick reply. Must get dinner on.
Chances are, if it was a dodgy death, there would probably be an original cert. and another one in the RCE's (Record of Corrected Entry).

In Scotland the registrar would have accepted as an informant a child as young as 14, and, in exceptional circumstances, even younger, as long as he was convinced that the child understood what was going on.

That written, many registrars would have preferred the evidence of an adult.

Re Wiliam Waddells Death Certificate

I have just spoke to my Mum & she is emphatic that she & my Aunt were shown Alexanders Death certificate & his place of death was definetly Edinburgh & cause of death accidental poisining. Thats the Certificate my sister & I saw circa2001. Now I am positive the Certificate I have from Scotlands People is the right one Dollar is where my GGrandfather was born 1856 & where his Mother died 1861(yes before the Census).
My Grandfather was aware that was how his Grandfather had died in fact he was always extra zealous about medication because of the demise of Alexander.
I can see no ref to a RCE on the Register/Certificate so how the heck do I find if there is one? Do I trawl through all the Alexander Waddells deaths hoping to find one which was poisined? Would an inquiry have taken place & would it have been in Edinburgh rather than Glasgow or Stirling? I am begining to hate my Ancestors.
