Glasgow education

Post by Dennis » Thu Feb 06, 2014 7:36 pm

Hi. When we left Scotland in June 1956 I was 8, turned 9 in September. What grades would I have attended there? I can't recall if they were actually called grades :) Even trying to remember where I lived there and where I went to school is pretty much a blank.

Thanks. dennis

Hi Dennis.
You start off school or I did a few years later aged 4/5 at Primary One so I'm guessing you would have been in Primary Three heading for Primary Four depending how old you were when you started school.

Is there a registry office I can contact to find out where in Glasgow I attended primary school; which, hopefully would lead to where we lived.

Thanks. dennis

One way of finding out this information is to look at the Outbound Passenger Lists (on FindMyPast) in which people give their last address in the UK. Most passengers would have given their last permanent address, but in some cases, unfortunately, they give their address as c/o [name of travel agent] or [name of company for whom they work]

Hi eilthireach,

I just did a search and my last address was 12 Ancroft Street in Maryhill.

Thanks. dennis

Sadly, the family's religion also comes into the equation if Roman Catholic you would have attended the nearest RC School if anything other you would have attended what was officially designated the local "non denominational" primary school but more probably referred to as the protestant school.

It's difficult to say based solely on address but the nearest school, I think was just off of Napiershall Street - the Virtual mitchell shows several schools in Maryhill itself and all are within a 1 to 2 mile radius of Ancroft Street. In those days they were very much stricter about the catchment area of the schools - it wouldn't matter if you lived within yards of School A if your address was considered to be in the catchment area of School B you went to school B.
