Inglis Links

Post by NZRadar18 » Mon Jul 21, 2014 6:00 am

Hi, I found this website when searching for more information about my Scottish forebears.

James Inglis, Hatmaker, Glasgow, was married at Irvine on the 16th day of June 1795, to Miss Frances Boyd, daughter of the late(Bailie) James Boyd, by the Reverend Mr James Richmond, Minister there.

James and Frances went on to have six children - James, Jean, Robert, Mary, Thomas and Frances.
Frances married William Boyd from O'Brien's Bridge, Ireland on 2 August 1831.
Willam and Frances emigrated to New Zealand. They had seven children, including my great grandfather, James Inglis Boyd.

I'm curious about the Inglis line prior to James - I have unconfirmed information that his parents were James and Mary Inglis, nee Provan, but have no confirmation or additional dates. I'm wondering if anyone reading this may be able to help me here.

I'm going to post other queries regarding other family links, including the Boyd family.

Many thanks
From a Scottish Flavoured Kiwi

Hi NZ

Familysearch.com shows

Name: James Inglis Spouse's Name: Mary Provan Event Date: 18 Feb 1744 Event - Marriage Place: Falkirk,Stirling,Scotland Spouse's Father's Name: Thomas Provan

I only found one child for James and Mary (but it's almost 1:00 a.m. so claim drowsiness if incorrect)

Name: John Inglis Gender: Male Christening Date: 08 Apr 1754 Christening Place: GLASGOW,LANARK,SCOTLAND Father's Name: James Inglis Mother's Name: Mary Provan

I think it's more likely that Mary Provan and James Inglis were your James' grandparents than his parents because your James would have been 40 years old at the time of his marriage, which would have been quite old for marrying and then following up with a large family and moving to NZ.

You may find some likely connections by checking further on Familysearch.com and the OPRs on scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Greetings from NZ.

Without trying to be rude Frances, I think it best to hunt out the facts, with an open mind.

Two John SHARP's came to NZ from the environs of Glasgow.

#1 John is recorded with 8 children born to him between his years of 24 to 48; while his son -

#2. John is recorded with 10 children born to him between his years of 41 to 62.

If they married a younger woman, and worked hard healthy lives in their new world, they were very productive both with family and in business.

Happy hunting,

Alan SHARP.

Thanks for that Frances. Clearly age has little bearing on whether prolific families ensued, or not. James Inglis who married Francis Boyd was clearly an older groom , but they went on to have six children. Their youngest child, Frances married William Boyd from O'Brien's Bridge, Ireland, and they came to New Zealand after having seven children born in Scotland. Their sons William (Bill) Boyd, James Inglis Boyd and Frank Robert Boyd all came to New Zealand. James Inglis Boyd is my great-grandfather.

I'll look at the other sites you mentioned.

Many thanks,
Regards,
