My g.g.grandfather William Davies, born 1838 in St. Martins, Shropshire, left home c.1872. According to a family story he said the 'he was going to look for gold'. I assumed that he had gone to the USA, but now wonder if he went to Scotland, as his son left Cheshire to go to Glasgow and might have been following his father. On the son's marriage certificate of 1900, his father is recorded as William Davies, manager of an oil works. I have found that a William Davies was a tenant of the Pumpherson Oil works in Pumpherson in 1888 and 1892. However I can't find any record of him, or even Pumpherson in the 1891 census to check if he was possibly my g.g.grandfather.
I wonder if anyone can help?

Hi don
And welcome to Talking Scot
You mention that "on the son's marriage certificate of 1900, his father is recorded as William Davies, manager of an oil works." Where did he marry? If married in Scotland, the mother's name should also be mentioned here. This may helpyou track down a marriage for the father, and maybe also locate the couple on a census which may help place them.
Later: Having now read the post below, I see that the son was married in England. Did the son die in Scotland?
Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. I found this post about the same man, but you may aleady know of it

Re: WILLIAM DAVIES
Hello Leslie.
Many thanks for your interest.
The old email enquiring about William Davies in the USA was when I had been told that an old photograph was American, but now it has been identified by an expert as taken in this country. Following further research I've found that William left home about 1872 and think that there's a good possibility that he went to Scotland for the reasons I've given in my post.
William's son was married in Edinburgh (bigamously, by the way), and gave his correct father and mother's names, stating that his father was the manager of an oil works. I would now like to check if the William Davies in Pumpherson in 1888 and 1902 was my g.g. grandfather, but for some reason I can't find him in the 1891 census. This is where I would dearly like some help.
Best regards,
Don
