Occupation S.C.F

Hi guys.

This one's got me stumped. Hope you can help.

In the 1841 census, my 19 year-old relative James Broadfoot's occupation is described as "S.C.F".
Anyone know what this means ? He lived in Gorbals at the time.
In later records, he is described as "Foundry Hammerman" and "Locomotive Engineer".
So he has a history in the Iron trades.

Any ideas ??

Sorry no idea at all but it is very strange that his occupation was abbreviated as the enumerators had strict instructions about that.

I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear he was the only S.C.F in all of Lanarkshire. Is this info from Ancestry or Freecen and have you looked at the original to confirm?

This was from the FREEcen entry.
However, I've just checked the original and it's the same - S.C.F. !!

And......on the same FREEcen entry, James' brother John is listed as a "Cotton Power Loom Tenter".
.....but, on the original, he's listed as "C.P.L.T.".
So, looks like the FREEcen people had a go at interpreting these abbreviations.
They got John's. But gave up on James'.

I think the original enumerator must have got a wee smacky wristy, for that one !

I'm still open to suggestions though. Anyone fancy an educated guess ?

Could the last word possibly be Fireman? One of my relatives is down as "fireman in foundry".

I recently was transcribing an entry that I thought was Fireman but after much checking and later census records realised it was "Finisher". Wondering if this may be S. Cotton Finisher, given the brother's occupation. Not sure on the S.

have you tried just clicking through the 'next households' on Freecen to see if anything obvious pops up in his neighbours?

I went one way and found a C.H.C. as an occupation! they are mainly in the weaving or blacksmith trades it seems, but with patience you may strike lucky!!!

Given his subsequent occupations Foundry or Fireman could fit

Hmmm....Don't know if it's an anachronism, or not, but I was thinking the "F" might be Foundryman.
I know this term was popular in the late 19th Century, but I've yet to spot an example of it in 1841.

I just came across this tonight - haven't been on the site for a while.

Looking at the 1841 Gorbals Census on Ancestry, there are loads of people with just 'Cotton Factory' given as their occupation and others as e.g Winder Cotton Factory", "Card Sharper Cotton Factory" and so on. These haven't been abbreviated, but could S.C.F stand for "S----- Cotton Factory?" For example, there is a Jean McCollum listed on Ancestty as a "Spoeader in Cotton Factory" [ScotlandsPeople says Jean McCallum was a Spreader in Cotton Factory ] and a Peter McGregor is listed as a Cotton Factory Sharper.

If there were so many in Gorbals with Cotton Factory as the occupation then I would vote for: SCF = Steam Cotton Factory.
