Why was the war memorial on the summit of the LAW of Dundee built in 1925 of Cornish Granite?

Re: Dundee Law
Hi Beckenham1,
See the article on the Scottish War Memorials Project website: http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmems ... c2633.html
The unveiling ceremony program mentions that the design was chosen following a competition, although it doesn't say if the material was the choice of the entrant, or of the Committee.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Dundee Law
The original plan was for Scottish Granite but this would have brought the total cost to £2000 more than what they had in hand, and they didn't think they could raise any more funds. Aberdeen Granite was out, and the only other possibles were Norwegian or Cornish, which were cheaper. There was some concern that the Norwegian variety may come from a German owned mine.
There was a comment by Lord Provost Spence, in one of the newspapers, that Cornish Granite would last forever, and that was long enough.
Sourced from The Courier and Argus, Dundee, August 11, 1923, September 05, 1923, and other newspapers.
Hope that helps,
Alan
