Kirk Session Records

Post by sheilajim » Fri Nov 06, 2015 12:07 am

Hi Everyone,

Some years ago, Scotland's People were supposed to bring the Kirk Session Records online. Has anybody heard anything about this lately? I have been waiting for them for a number of years now, hoping that they might help to break down some brick walls. ](*,)

I would also like to know if any Scottish School Records will come online.

Thanks

Sheila

Hi,

This evening I was reading minutes from the last Scottish Association of Family History Societies meeting in October, It states still no dates for the release of Kirk Session Records. And nothing on School records :(

From National Records of Scotland. http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/research ... rds-online

“We plan to begin making church court records available online in 2017, following the re-launch of the ScotlandsPeople website in 2016. We anticipate that it will take a significant time to upload the full range of kirk session, presbytery, synod and General Assembly records for the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which amount to more than 20,000 volumes. Researchers will have the choice of accessing the records free of charge in various Scottish archives, or using the subscription service.”

See item 9 of 2010 User Group minutes. http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Conte ... s%2017.pdf

Maybe the subscription service will only apply to the Kirk Session records, but if so, why does it require a re-launch of the SP site.

The "re-launch" of the site refers I believe to the transfer to a new service provider in 2016 - given that they are proceeding with this change and that they think the job will take some time it does make sense to delay it in order for the new company to undertake all of the work rather than have some of it done under one company and have this negatively impact on the overall transfer of Scotlands people to its new provider.

Hi All,

Currie- If this means that we are finally getting the Kirk Session records, this is great news. =D> Although it does seem as if it is going to take at least another year. I can hardly wait, but then I have been waiting for some years now. :geek:

Does anybody know if Scotland kept school records? It would be nice to find out which schools my family went to and how they did.

Thank you for the info.

Sadly as with all records the answer is both Yes & No. Although records were maintained relatively few have survived and those that have are generally the school rolls (i.e the list of pupils attending) but even this is patchy and in the majority of cases the records are held by local authorities rather than centrally. The City Archives at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow have some Glasgow School records.

Another area to try is to look for local history groups who may have access to some records overlooked by others. A good example of this is the Carluke Parish Historical Society ( http://www.carlukehistory.co.uk/ ) who have made some Carluke Records available on their site.

Hi All,

Stew-Good one! :D

Falkryn- My mother spent her early days in Renfrewshire, but at some time the family moved to Glasgow. So I guess it might be hit and miss for her. :?:

Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.

When my mother passed away I found that she had saved all of my school records and certificates. Interesting to see how they graded us "back then" and how the kids are graded now.
