Hi,
I have recently found that one of my unmarried ancestors gave birth to a child at 403 St Georges Road in 1923. Does anyone know if there was any sort of establishment there that would provide maternity care to an unmarried mother who would then place the child for adoption? This was not her normal place of residence.
Thanks
Lizzie

The 1920 and 1925 valuation rolls index at Scotlands People show that it was the home of an Agnes Flind who was a midwife.

Re: Unmarried mother
Thanks Annette. I have been trying to get back into the forum since yesterday to amend my question as I found that information out too! It kept closing down on me. I had found someone else on another forum from sometime ago seeking info about that address as her mother had also been born there so I was convinced that there must be something relevant there.
Do you know anything about adoption at that time? The birth of the child in question was registered by his natural mother with her surname but his adoption family name as his middle name. In later documents these name were reversed.

Re: Unmarried mother
Adoption before 1930 was done by private arrangement.

Sounds to me like it was arranged before he was born if he had the middle name of his adoptive parents. I assume there was no father's name on the birth entry.
I've known many cases where a male child was given his father's name ie Joe Bloggs followed by his mother's maiden name if he was illegitimate.
Is it his father you are trying to find more about?
You could try searching the indexes in case a court application was involved.

Re: Unmarried mother
Have also been having problems with "Resource Limit" very frustrating when I have just typed you a message and it disappears!
Trying again.
Thanks for your response Annette, I wasn't looking for the father as he is not mentioned not even as "unknown", just wondered about the naming. I agree that the natural mother must have known the adopting parents whom I think were connected to the Salvation Army. A bit strange as they were apparently very poor while the natural mother was a certified teacher.
