Post by Davie » Thu Sep 29, 2005 3:16 pm

Greetin's
Trying to find a David and Elizabeth (mcNaughton) Manson in Dunbarton, probably Bonhill or The Renton. 1861, both aged about thirty.
Children: Archie 5, James 3 and Elizabeth just born.

Originally, DUNBARTON(shire) was the county and DUMBARTON was the town. I think at some stage, DUMBARTON was adopted for both, but the current councils for West Dunbarton and East Dunbarton use the Dunbarton spelling. The Chapman code for counties uses DNB for DUNBARTONSHIRE. Personally, I would take DUNBARTON(shire) to be historically correct for the county, but be prepared to find either spelling used on documents.

As far as I can tell, the town has always been DUMBARTON and never DUNBARTON.

Al the best,

Andrew Paterson

Correction added later - Chapman Code DNB (not DUN as I gave before).

The story I'd heard, but no guarantee that it's not apochryphal, is that the "n" was a mapmaker's mistake .............

Hello all

I just had a look at a birth certificate from 1952 (mine) and at the bottom it states the following:

Extracted from the Register Book of Births, for the District of Dumbarton, in the County of Dunbarton..... etc.
Margaret H Brewer Assist Registrar.

Which shatters my belief that it was Dumbarton on both instances.
