Good evening. I feel bad to have been away for so long but I am in need of help and direction please. I have a Frederick Kirk, born at Townhead, Kilbirnie, on 6 March 1872 - Father: John Kirk, a Stoker on a Locomotive and Margaret Steel. On the 1891 census aged 18 he was a boarder in the home of Andrew Morely in Kilmarnock and his occupation was locomotive engine fitter. The next information I have is from the Poor Relief Records at Govan Combination Poorhouse who referred him to Kilbirnie Inspector of the Poor. At this point his father agreed to take him into the family home at 18 Montgomerie Street, Ardrossan. He was classed as partially disabled and totally destitute and seemed to have drifted from place to place for some time. I have no record of him in 1901 or 1911 and can find no record of his death between 1902 and 1972. According to the Poor House Record he also used his mother's maiden name of Steel. Any help will be most gratefully received. isk

Welcome back
You don't mention the date of the Poor Relief report?
I did find a death for a Frederick Steele in 1924 in Denniston - aged 53 so born ~1871
I can't find an obvious match for him ^ in either the 1901 or 1911 census so wonder if he's your man?
Have you tracked down the rest of the family in census records to see if he's with any of them? [he was one of at least 6 according to the 1881 census]

Good morning Wilma M. Thank you for your response. Sadly the Frederick Steele who died in Dennistoun is not my man. The Poor Relief Records are for 1902. He is not with any of the family. I suspect a couple of them left Scotland and it is possible that Frederick went with them though if he was disabled I would have thought remaining with his parents would have been more likely. Maybe Frederick will have to remain a lost soul. Thank you for your interest. isk
