Jelly works

Hi

Can anyone help me with this query.

I have a poor law record of my Great Grandmother. In the Poor law it states that she was employed in the Jelly works Renfrew and Govan.

Does anyone know what the Jelly works were?.

'Jelly' in Scotland can mean 2 different things
a. table jelly, the wobbly clear gelatine dessert type
b. the jam or preserve or conserve variety for spreading on bread.

Factories producing either of both of these would be failr widespread i'd imagine.

Govan as a town seemed to produce everything imaginable according to old maps [ there's even a sizable 'pick handle' factory!], of note however would be the Co-Operative movement.
They had a very large range of factories in the area, mainly in Shieldhall.
Shieldhall is at the western edge of Govan, just before the town of Renfrew. which would make it quite a likely contendor for your lady.

I have seen a map in the past of the complex, but can't lay hands on it right now.

I'll spend a bit more time looking at old maps etc next week, but you should look yourself at the National library of Scotland and see what you come up with, as I expect you have her addresses etc.
