Could some kind person take the trouble to find my great great grandfathers family in the 1851 census for Glasgow.
His name is JOHN TAYLOR (Carter) and his wife is JANE or JANET. They should have at least 3 children, AGNES(7), JOHN(6),and JANET(3).
I'm trying to find out where he was born and I suspect it was Ireland.

Hi Rachel,
Thanks for taking the trouble to answer - I'd nearly given up hope!
I think John Taylor would be about 40 years of age as his wife was 52 on the 1861 census but he was already dead by then. In 1861 the family were living at 49 Green St, Calton. I think the ages of the children are pretty accurate though and there might be a Stuart Taylor mentioned who was born in 1851.
If you need anymore info let me know and needless to say I'd be really grateful if you could locate the family.

John Taylor age 37.
Janet Taylor age 42
Agnes Taylor age 7.
John Taylor age 5.
Janet Taylor age 3
Samuel Taylor age 1.
The names tie up and the difference in age between Janet and John seems to be right.
My own ggrandparents were living in Green Street Calton about the same time.
good hunting.

Hi Rachel,
Yes that looks like them although I don't know how Stuart became Samuel!
Now I know John Taylors exact age I might be able to find his death if it was after 1855. I'm surprised to learn he was born in Calton though, I was convinced he was from Ireland probably because his wife was from there. Were the children born in Calton as well and was John a carter in 1851?
Also I wasn't sure from your post - were the family at 49 Green St in 1851?
Sorry to hit you with even more queries and thanks for looking them up for me .

1851 census
Hi Caroline.
With Rachel's help here's the 1851 census, and wee Samuel's name was very clear to read, just as it's very clear as Stuart in 1861.
Thomson's Lane was between Green St. & Risk St. I believe you don't need the full 1861 details at 49 Green St?

1851 cens 622 (594) Ed 16 p 26 (Barony - Calton)
17 Thompsons Lane.
John TAYLOR, head, marr, 51, agricultural labourer, b Ireland
Janet TAYLOR, wife, marr, 42, ------------- b Ireland
Agnes TAYLOR, daur, 7, ----------------- b Glasgow, LKS
John TAYLOR, son, 5, -------------------- b Glasgow, LKS
Janet TAYLOR, daur, 3, ------------------ b Glasgow, LKS
Samuel TAYLOR, son, 2mos, ----------- b Glasgow, LKS

ps, Hi Rachel, maybe a wee bit confusion over the 1851 & 1861 census indexes.
The 1851 gives the enumeration district after a name, but the 1861 gives the birthplace.
--
Edited to correct father John's age from 37 to 51.

Hi Rachel and Jack,
Thanks to you both for that , it's much appreciated and I now know where my family originated from even if I can't trace it back any further.
I do have the full details of the 1861 entry for the family Jack as I was able to travel to the Mitchell a few years ago to get it . Unfortunately I'm now housebound so I have to rely on the internet and kind people like yourself for my research.
If you're visiting the Mitchell again I was wondering if you could do me another favour, I'm trying to find another grt. grt. grandfather on the 1851 census. The details are:
RICHARD NICHOLSON (33) CALICO PRINTER b. IRELAND
MARTHA NICHOLSON (23) b. DALRY, AYRSHIRE
MARTHA NICHOLSON (5) b. GOVAN, GLASGOW
In 1861 they were living in the Gallowgate if that's any help.

Re 1851 census Glasgow
Hi Caroline,
I'm sure i see Richard & Martha NICHOLSON & family in 1851 - also with them is an Isabella abt 1. Will get details at one point.
They are living on the south side of the River Clyde - Hutchesontown. The Gallowgate (as you'll know) is north of the river.

Hi Rachel, yes you're right about the 1851 CD; it's basically a name index only so gives nothing on occupation or birthplace. Even so, it's still very useful.
The 1861 Glasgow/Lanarkshire census CD does give birthplaces, but it's very limited on using *wildcards* to search - can only be used at the end; unlike the 1851 where they can be used anywhere in the name.
Another snag with all these indexes is that you don't know who is all in the one household until you look at the original film - that's why i have to go up to The Mitchell to find out
I believe you can order census films into any local LDS Family Centre; but there doesn't seem to be any really near Nuneaton
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp
All the earlier censuses will (eventually) be online at SP, but meanwhile if you have any names that are holding you up on further research then please say and i'll try to get the details.
