Fishermen 1871 Census

Post by Joan » Thu Oct 06, 2005 1:58 pm

Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me if men were out fishing were they just left off the Census?

The reason I ask is I have checked the census for William Glover and his family. His wife and two youngest children are at home. I cannot trace him or his two older sons (aged 11 and 18 ) anywhere. I know that William was a fisherman.

Was there any provision for those at sea or were they ignored?
Thanks
Joan :-k

Boats/Vessels, naval and otherwise, were enumerated, but, sadly, the 1851 records have been lost.

The treatment varied from census to census in terms of commercial vessels, with merchant ship records being included in the registration district details where they were berthed, or next docked, or, in some censuses, brought together in terms of merchant naval records.

Thanks for the help. It's the 1871 Census I am looking at. Are the vessel census records held on Scotlands People or are they held elsewhere. I can't find them but for me that's nothing new.
Thanks again

The Scottish merchant vessel records, i.e. not naval, and including fishing boats should be on SP.

Hello,
If you can't find them on SP, don't forget to check the English census. I found one individual & his son on ships in Northumberland in 1861 & 1871.

Thanks Gina and David,
I have tried Shipping, England and Wales but my folk remain elusive. I spent a fortune on SP looking at every William Glover anywhere near his age and also for his two sons, found sons! William still missing. The enumerator writes William Glover's name down then crosses it out, I presume he asked who is head of household - told William -then "bit is no ear".
Thanks for all your help

I am still searching for my elusive William Glover on the 1871 census. Whilst researching other dates however I have now found out that he and later his son were on the whaling vessels which worked out of Fife. Does anyone know if there is any publication/resource about the whaling industry in Fife. I knew there had been a whaling industry in Dundee but was suprised about Fife. I have looked on the internet but everything I have found is centred on Dundee.
Thanks
Joan :)
