Emigration to Australia

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Thu Oct 13, 2005 8:48 pm

Hi Everyone,

My 2 x great granduncle left Scotland and emigrated to Australia aroud mid 1800 and took with him his wife and children so I am assuming he was not deported. His name was James McGown born 23.6.1822 in Lesmahagow and his wife was Jane or Jean Lockhart. I am nor sure how many children they have with them. I have been trying to find the ship he sailed on but with no luck. Can anyone help with any ideas as to where I can look next. He had a child born in Australia in 1859

Regards,
Audrey

Hi Audrey,
Sorry can't help on Australian shipping - maybe ask on the TS Australia & NZ forum?
--
But if these are some of their children, then they must've sailed sometime after Nov 1858.

JEAN MCGOWN - Birth: 11 JUL 1845 Glasgow, Lanark
MARY MCGOWN - Birth: 12 JUL 1856 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark
JESSIE MCGOWN - Birth: 25 NOV 1858 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark

What was James' occupation? Do you know where Jean was born?
As James & Jean married in 1842 there's a fair chance that the 1851 census may show more children.

Jack

May be worth looking at if you know roughly when and where they would have gone.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

There are two James McGown's coming up on a McGown search on the following

http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/search.htm[url]

They are listed as crew so if your James was a mariner this would explain why you haven't found the family emigrating. There are two McGowns listed as passengers seperately but no Jane, I didn't check Lockhart.

I just found a reference to this ship again on the above site......

Mariners and ships in Australian Waters
"JANE LOCKHART"
SCHOONER OF SYDNEY, JOHN L CLULOW, MASTER, BURTHEN 80 TONS
FROM THE PORT OF OTAGO N.Z TO SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, 7 FEBRUARY 1862

Was Jane Lockhart his wife or his ship.......?

Is it this James which I think is from your tree at Family Tree Maker? I'll try and find some Queensland sources for imigration.

Children of THOMAS MCGOWAN and MARGARET KNOX are:
7. i. MARGARET3 MCGOWN, b. 13 Apr 1821, Blackwood Yards; d. 21 Oct 1905, Birkwood Sguare Lesmahagow.
8. ii. JAMES MCGOWN, b. 23 Jun 1822, Blackwood Yards; d. 28 May 1902, Bundaberg Queensland.
iii. JANE (JEAN) MCGOWAN17, b. 29 Aug 1824, Blackwood Yards18.
iv. GEORGE MCGOWAN19, b. 03 Sep 1826, Blackwood Yards20; m. MARGARET MCINTOSH, 26 Mar 1853, Lesmahagow Scotland21.
More About GEORGE MCGOWAN:
Census: 1851, High Blackwood Yards farmers son
9. v. ANDREW MCGOWAN, b. 23 Nov 1828, Blackwood Yards; d. 20 Feb 1884, Boghead Lesmahagow.
vi. MARION MCGOWN22, b. 30 Jun 1832, Blackwood Yards22; d. Bef. 1834, Boghead Lesmahagow.
10. vii. MARION MCGOWAN, b. 30 Jun 1834, Blackwood Yards.

This site lists James McGown, Jean Lockhart McGown and other sundry McGowans of later dates who could be children or grandchildren and their place of birth.

http://www.freehomepages.com/bundyray/B ... y/MDIN.htm

I don't know how much history Ray has but it could be worth dropping him a line to see if he knows what date James imigrated. He seems to be just setting up the web pages. His email address is:

EUREKA ?????

Takes a while to load. The McGown is too young but the Jean and James McGowan seem to match?
