1851 Census Lookup for Glasgow .....

Post by momat » Sun Oct 16, 2005 5:24 am

Can any one help me PLEASE with a look uo for 1851 Census around the GLASGOW/LANARK area for an ALEXANDER MATHIE (Labourer)
wife ELIZABETH.
Both of the above died prior to 1858 but I cannot find DCs for them.
I know of one son WILLIAM who would be 13/14 years old in 1851.
Thank You
Maureen

Hi Maureen,
I think i can see the family in 1851, but there is no father Alexander MATHIE - just Elizabeth (44) & 5 children.
Will get details next week. By the way, what is Elizabeth's maiden name?
If this is your William MATHIE & Agnes McBRIDE, then the Ann "MATHIESON" who married John HART could well be his slightly older sister.
Seems John & Ann had Elisabeth before they married.

And this might be William's unmarried elder sister Janet.

Post by momat » Sun Oct 16, 2005 8:20 pm

Hello Jack,
Thank you for helping.
Elizabeth Mathie M S was LETHAM / LATHAM not certain of writing on documents.
William Mathie is the Correct one as he was married to Agnes McBride
I Have the 1881 Census that shows all of Williams family of 8 children and there is a Janet aged 2 so it is not that one.Shw may be Alexanders Sister?

thanks again.

Hi Maureen,
The reason i was thinking that Ann "MATHIESON" was William's sister is because of these censuses.
Full details next week.
--
1851 622 (577) Ed 37 p 16
Elizabeth MATHIE 44
Janet 20
Alexander 18
Ann 15
William 14
John 12
--
1861 cens 644-1 Ed 119 p 24
Janet MATHIE 27, b Parkhead
Ann HART 24, b Glasgow
Elizabeth HART 4, b Glasgow
Mary HART 2, b Glasgow
Agnes MATHIE 22, b Paisley
Agnes MATHIE, abt 1, b Glasgow
[can't see Alexander MATHIE b1858, and no mention of hubbies for Ann HART and Agnes MATHIE]
--
But of course it may all be coincidence, and i'm looking at the wrong family altogether - not unknown for me to do that!

1851 Glasgow Census

Post by momat » Mon Oct 17, 2005 9:02 am

Hi Jack,
There is a possability there.
I will have to go back to S P and check out "ANN".
I only know that on William's marriage to Agnes 1858 it states both his parents are deceased.

Some censuses

Post by Jack » Mon Oct 17, 2005 9:43 pm

Hi Maureen,
Here are the census details, and also found a possible for Elizabeth in 1841; the "P.P." may mean Parish Pauper? Hubby Alexander recently died?
Can't see an Alexander "MATHIE" abt 8yrs anywhere, with anyone, in Glasgow 1841 to suit, but he shows up as an 18yr old in 1851; rather odd. Maybe his name was just missed out when filling in the census schedule?
Or once the all Scotland 1841 censuses come online at SP you might find him.

Hi Jack,
A very BIG thank you for all that data. :D
It is most appreciated.
I shall sit down and digest it and see if it throws out the answer .
Will let you know if I find the "Hubbies".

Hi Maureen,
Very pleased to hear you've found Alexander's DC. I'd only based my guess on the possibility that he'd used a naming pattern for his children.
i.e. the 1st son being Alexander (his father) & the 2nd daur Elizabeth (his mother).

May i ask what his wife's name was, his occupation, the informant on DC, and address where he died?
If it was the west of Scotland i could try and find him in the 1861 census.

Ta - Jack
ps, as i said earlier - it's not unknown for me to be looking at wrong families!

Alexander Mathie

Post by momat » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:30 pm

It appears to be the correct family as most of the naes have been used repeatedly down into this generation (my Husband James ) family

Alexander Mathie died 1865 Occ Ship /House Painter
Wifes name Mary McIlwee ? DEC tried uplifting that one last night from SP and was given a completly wrong file and await S P 's reply
Parents to alex are JAMES MATHIE / MARGARET WISHART .Can't find her on SP .
DC Informant signature was ELZABETH MATHIE sister

Cheers
