Bishoptown, Renfrewshire .....

Post by catbug » Wed Oct 19, 2005 10:06 pm

Hello,

Does anyone know of an area in Renfrewshire called Bishoptown or Bishopton? I found an 1871 census entry relating to one of my ancestors, Hugh Gallacher, which says he was born in Bishoptown, Renfrewshire circa 1835. I don't know the exact year of his birth as he died at quite a young age so this is the only census entry I have for him so far, as no other years are available online yet during the time he was alive as far as I know, and his age on the DC and his marriage certificate don't add up to the same year of birth. I have been unsuccessful in trying to locate his birth and have tried doing a parent search (given as James Gallacher and Mary O'Hara) in case he was registered under a different first name but still cannot find anything. My last resort is trying to find any Gallacher/Gallaghers born around the time in Bishoptown, Renfrewshire but the IGI doesn't seem to have a record of this place. If anyone can help with this I would be hugely grateful.

Thanks,

Cat

Hello Cat,

The area would be Bishopton, it's a small village between Erskine and Renfrew.
There is a marriage on the IGI between a James Gollacher and Mary O'Hara in 1838 but in Dundee.

You may be more sucessful looking for Eskine or Erskyn[e] as a place of bith in the past

That seemed to have been the Parish and area name in the past.

In fact the Primary school in Bishopton has 'Eriskyne' as it's school crest !!!

Free census has the following from 1841:

GALLOCHER Phillip M 12 Ireland
GALLOCHER Rosy F 9 Ireland

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for such quick replies, they are all very helpful, especially the 1841 census :D . I had been looking on Freecen but I must have missed that entry so it is very, very helpful indeed - thanks Andy! I'll definitely try looking for a birth in the Erskine area as well as the Abbey (Paisley) Parish now - hopefully will be able to find something. I had seen the James Gollacher/Mary O'Hara marriage but couldn't be sure if it was definitely the right one. James was a Hawker, according to his son's DC so it is quite likely that they travelled around. Still not completely sure that's it's the right one but it helps that someone else thinks it's a possibility. At least one of Hugh's children ended up in Dundee so there could be some connection there that I will try to find.

Thanks again for all your time and help,

Cat

Hi again Nancy,

Just out of interest - did you find the census record on Freecen? Just because I had a look and couldn't find it and I was interested in knowing if it said where in Ireland they were born. I don't think it will but I have seen other records that say, for example, County Mayo Ireland so I don't know for sure. I looked at the entry Andy found and that was great :D but just said Ireland. If you can help at all with where you saw the record I'd be very grateful :) .

Thanks,

Cat

Cat,
If you look at Andy's post (a couple before Nancy) you will see he got the info from FREECEN.

Hi Annette,

Thanks for that :) I should have made it clearer in my last post that I looked at the entry Andy found on Freecen but I wondered where Nancy got the info she found, as the census entry she found was slightly different (Rosy wasn't on it and the surname was spelled differently). I looked on Freecen but could only find one relevant entry for them (the one Andy kindly found) and wondered if Nancy could tell me where she got the other entry as I wanted to look to see if there was any more information that hadn't been transcribed on to the Freecen site. Hope that makes sense now, sorry for any confusion!

Thanks,

Cat
