Evening all,
I was wondering if anyone had access to the 1851 census for Edinburgh. I'm looking for confirmation on a few names within a household.
My family are as follows:-
William Wilkinson married Jane Birkett in Edinburgh 17.06.1845
William was born Penrith, England 1819 (1856 he is an Inspector of Tolls - 1861 he is a Surveyor of Land)
Jane was born Newton Reigny, England 17.09.1824
In the 1861 Edinburgh Census the family are as follows:-
William age 41 born England
Jane age 36 born England
William age 13 born Edinburgh, St Cuthbert
Dennison age 11 born Edinburgh, St Cuthbert
Mary Ann age 8 born Edinburgh, St Cuthbert
From the 1851 census I'm looking for:-
I'm looking for the 1st born son John, born about 1846, died 17.06.1856 and especially to confirm another son called Dawson born about 1849.
Many thanks
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
The IGI shows two of these children:
Dennison show up in the IGI as an LDS submission for his marriage to Ann Christian, in Northfield, Bower, Caithness on 28 Mar 1873, His age is given as 22.
An earlier Dawson Wilkinson's birth shows up on 15 Oct 1826, in Illingworth, Yorkshire, born to John Wilkinson and Nancy. Three previous Den(n)ison Wilkinsons show up on the IGI.
Hopefully, the 1851 census will help to sort out your Wilkinsons (and maybe a look at the OPR microfilm too).
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,
I've uploaded a file for Dawson and as you can see it's quite a clear image and shows the registration of Dawson and Mary Ann. They seem to have been registered later than they were born for some reason, Dawson 1849 and Mary Ann 1852 although the certificate date is 1854. The name Dennison comes from about 1750 in my family with the marriage of John Dennison to Mary Sanderson and runs through every generation up until my uncle today, Dennison Ross. The father William looks to be educated so I'm sure he would have picked the mistake up.....although I maybe wrong

Maybe just simply the time that they got round to doing it, perhaps given the year being 1854, the desire being to have the kids registered by the church, and not the state ............STUARTDALGLEISH wrote:Just one more thing,
Any clues why they would wait 2 and 5 years before registering the children?

I have some branches of the family born in the 1820s to 1830s and listed in the OPR in 1853 and 1854 (extra scope for errors to be made). I had wondered if the churches were sending their folk round to have the births included in their records before their records were (more or less) superceded by the upcoming statutory registration.
They claim to have been born and baptized in the 1820s to 1830s, just recorded some time later.
In my own way of thinking - rounding up the heathens.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew
best wishes
Lesley
I've been looking Dunfermline OPRs over the last few days and it certainly looked like a similar thing was happening there - iI was surprised to see but it was very noticeable that there were a lot of retrospective births written up around 1853/4.I have some branches of the family born in the 1820s to 1830s and listed in the OPR in 1853 and 1854 (extra scope for errors to be made).
