1861 Census .....

Post by DavidWW » Tue Oct 25, 2005 7:14 pm

Hi All

As many of you will already know the 1861 census is there and waiting for you :!:

The only problem is that, following a press and TV launch earlier today, it's probably the case that everyone and their granny is trying to access the site  , leading to occasional overloading.............

Jist dinnae be worrit if it succumbs occasionally to overload ........... in the next 48/72 hours

Previous GROS/SP launches, - the original site and various upgrades, - have been so-called "soft launches", - i.e. no great PR campaign in the very beginning.

This has meant that the "word" has circulated around the genealogical world and that interest group have had a look at the site or upgrades and carried out their backlog of searches before the formal PR launch which inevitably leads to a short term spike in interest over several days in the site by "everyone and their granny", - the classic example of how not to do it being the 1901 English/Welsh census launch, - worldwide media coverage, - leading to the site going off-line for many months

Why GROS/SP policy has changed in this instance is an interesting question .......... pressure they perceive following the Ancestry launch of the various English/Welsh censuses, perchance :?: :!:

..... or many failed promises in terms of the 1861 availability date :?: , ... but what do a a few days matter in terms of avoiding a site overload :?: :!:

It certainly works for me.

McDonald's crawling out from the woodwork. Four families all living next door to each other. Four families for 11 credits.
