Missing from the 1861 census .....

Ive had no trouble with access this time - which is great .

But are all parishes uploaded this time?
I ask because I can't find anyone in Ratho. - not just my families ( Robertson, Mitchell) - I can't find anyone there ? Are they all on holiday?

Hi Sally,

There is a problem with Ratho. After reading your post, I checked some of my Ratho Patersons. This family, I have a photocopy of the census page, so I know they were in Ratho.

Ratho (698), Enumeration District 2, Page 14, Schedule 74
Peter Paterson (33)
Mary Paterson (39)
Mary Paterson (8)
Robert Paterson (6)
Catherin Paterson (2) [no "e" on the end of Catherin]
Margaret Paterson (1)

On doing a search, you find them, but the county and registration district fields are empty. Hence, it finds nothing under Ratho.

The GROS number given is 698/A0, 002/0A, 014. The correct image appears.

My feeling is they have messed up with the registration district nyumber for Ratho. Their GROS number implies that it is RD number 698/A. But Ratho did not become 698/A until 1870. Up to 1869, it was 698, with no suffix letter.

I think they need to make a correction to their RD index for the 1861 census for Ratho.

Andrew many thanks for that - it proves it's not just me .

I haven't found my particular family yet. But I'm not going to invest any more credits in them until I can search by the parish first .

Your example does indicate that some basic checking has not taken place somewhere.
I wonder if there are other RDs that this applies to.
