I am looking for help in finding out some more information on the above lady, she is the daughter of Helen Lockie and David Dodds born in Crosslee, Stow 13th May 1841. She appears in the 1841,1851,1861 census returns for Stow but after this i am unable to locate any more information about her.
I would be greatful for any help

Hi there Ruth and Welcome!

Do you think Margaret got married after 1871?? Where did all her siblings end up?......did the family move from the area? If you think she might have married there are a couple guesses from the 1881 Census that could be checked out as they are listed born Stow and have no noticeable children older than 10.........Have you seached ScotlandsPeople for a marriage for her already?

Hi Jean
I have looked and looked for both marriage and deaths for a Margaret Dodds and can't find her anywhere, the only thing I have come up with so far is that she may have had an illegitimate child, a Mary Dods born 1862 Stow.
In the 1871 census there is a Mary Wilson aged 9 living with Helen Lockie/Dodds as her Grandaughter in Stow, I wondered if this was the same child.
Like you say lots of questions very few answers
It seems to be a common theme in this family that people just disappeared, Margarets father David Dodds disappears sometime after the 1841 census, on the 1851 census Helen is shown as being supported by the Parish as deserted by husband, I would love to find out something more about him as he is my link to going back further, but I have absolutely no idea where he ran away to :?
Anyway I really appreciate your help
Ruth :D

Hi Ruth
Well....I spent all last evening puzzling on this one. I can tell you just about anything about your family except where Margaret Dods and her (very likely) daughter Mary Dods (Wilson) got to. I've tracked down Margaret's siblings and Helen's death and they are all right in the predictable areas. I'm wondering if you tried finding Margaret in the 1891 or 1901 census? I didn't search those as my credit pile was depleted. I recall in my own research that I had a lost rellie that seemed to fall off the face of the earth after a census showing her at age 9. I assumed she had died or left the country but could find nothing anywhere. Then I found by an extremely circuitous route her line exisiting some generations in the future by virtue of a next of kin mention on an immigration to Boston. That took me back to finding her marriage in Scotland. Inexplicably she disappeared for a block of time only to resurface in an unexpected place. I did search for Margaret's death under just MN Dods for a wide range but didn't see any likely prospects so if she did stay in Scotland she likely married or changed her name. I strongly think that Mary Wilson is the same Mary born as Dods in 1862. The Wilson name does not pop out in any of Helen's other children's families so I'm guessing this is a huge hint as to her father.

But like you say....many questions....few answers! ....but then again misery loves company

Best wishes
Jean

Dods/Dodds of Stow

Post by JohnDods » Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:02 am

Hi Ruth,
I know of a fellow family historian here in New Zealand researching the Helen Lockie and David Dodds line.
We are both members of the Lothian's Family History Society.
If you send me a private message with your email address I can forward it to her if you like.
Hunting down David Dodds after is runner , still remains a unsolved, but these mysteries are part of the fun of the chase.
I am slowing building my database of DODS/DODDS, BDM, census, probate, immigration and other records.

Good Hunting
