Hi all,
I’d be grateful for some guidance on the following.
John McNamee and Martha Quigley married 17 June 1849 in Bothwell. This was their second marriage. Two years later, in the 1851 census for Lanarkshire, they are recorded as living with two of John’s children: Michael aged 14 born Ireland.
Francis aged 9 born Ireland.
One of Martha’s: Martha Maloy aged 12 born Ireland One of the second marriage: Ann McNamee age 16 months.
My problem. The only sign of the family after the 1851 census is: 1861 census: Martha and Ann aged 10 who seems to have been the only child from the second marriage
1869: Daughter Ann’s marriage, Bothwell.
1872: Martha’s death at Chapelhall, Bothwell. According to the death certificate husband, John McNamee, wasn’t reported as being deceased.
There is no sign of Martha in the 1871 census a year before her death. Would the fact she died a pauper have anything to do with that?
Apart from the 1851 census I have been unable to find any trace of John McNamee or the children from his first marriage. No marriages, no deaths, no censuses.
What should be my next move?
Thanks,
Jim

What were Martha and John's ages on the 1851 census?
Have you tried Quigley for Martha in 1871?
There is a Ma* Quigley age 53 in Bothwell in 1871.
There is a John McNamee age 68 living in Govan in 1881. Also a Francis of the correct age, a coal miner living in New Monkland.
Perhaps you have checked these people out, or maybe they are the wrong ages.

Annette M

Hi Jim,
I know you'll have some of these at least - they're just so's anyone (Annette for a start!) helping can see them.
Guessing time now....
The Francis in 1851 (dcd. by 1861) may be related to John "McNAMEE"? (presumably John's still living 1861 as wife Martha is as married).
You'll note the lodger Francis 20 with Bridget in 1861 - son of John?
Martha QUIGLY's age has discrepancies - 40 in 1851, 44 in 1861. What age was on her 1872 DC?
Did hubby John McNAMEE have an occupation that would take him away from home?
If not, then maybe they'd separated?
But where is he 1861? Difficult to pin down because of his surname - there are many variations.

Hi Annette and Jack,
Many thanks for your response. Jack’s, in particular, was very illuminating and solved, in a round about way, what prompted my post. He also mentioned a possible connection between Francis McNamee, husband of Bridget Flynn, and the John McNamee in question.
In the 1851 Lanarkshire Census Index I have: John McNamee and Martha (Quigley) and family. Bernard McNamee and Bridget (O’Neil) and family.
Unlike my index only census, Jack’s census gave the crucial information that Bernard was John’s brother. This was only partially correct but was enough to answer the main part of my question. Bernard and John (twenty years of age between them) were actually half brothers, not brothers. The 1861 death certificate of Francis McNamee cites the Informant as Bernard McNamee, relationship – half brother.
The death certificates of both Bernard and Francis seem to bear this out.
Francis’s parents: James McNamee and Bridget Hughes
Bernard’s parents: James McNamee and Ann Campbell.
Francis McNamee and Bridget Flynn were married in St. Mary’s, Parish of Drumlish, Killoe, Longford on 16th Feb. 1836 I have the DoB of most of their children born in Ireland. Admittedly a lot of the work didn’t come solely from my efforts but from a fortuitous error (for me, anyway) of an Irish research centre, but that’s another story.
Martha Quigley died aged 60 in 1872. Her death certificate simply states she was married to John McNamee. Was he out of the country or were they separated and Martha simply didn’t know? There is no clue in the 1869 marriage of Ann McNamee, the only child of John and Martha. Again, the certificate simply gives John’s name and occupation as farm labourer.
I’ve tried numerous variations, wildcards etc., but John McNamee is still elusive as ever – and there isn’t too many to check out. I did find Bernard McNamee and family in the 1861 Lanarkshire Census Index under Barnard Mc Narnel!
I set out searching for the death of John McNamee to ascertain his parents’ names in order to make a family connection with Francis. I haven’t found his death certificate but thanks to the help here I’ve made a breakthrough.
Thanks,
Jim.

... but that's another story
Hello Jim,
I have been intrigued for some time by your reference to the information you received from an Irish research centre. Would you be so kind as to elaborate?
Through the efforts of a canadian cousin, Anne Marie, I have discovered that I am a descendant of Francis McNamee and Bridget Flynn.
I think Francis parents were James McNamee and Bridget Hughes but I would very much like to discover anything more about them.
Can you help, please?
Kind regards,
Alfred

Hi Alfred,
It's been a long time since I posted the above. The answer to your request is a wee bitty convoluted so I'll reply in a personal message, if that's okay.
