I am researching my GGg Grandfather William McMenemy, married to Catherine AKA Jane Durrach, I am trying to find out @ when they came to Scotland, on an 1883 Poorhouse records, their son Andrew lists their birthplace as Ireland. I would really appreciate any effort.
Kind regards,
Karen McMenemy-Delmarco

Hi Karen and Welcome to TalkingScot!
If you could spare a few more details it could greatly improve the chances of finding some results. Would also like to point out that both the 1861 and 1871 Scottish Census are indexed and fully searchable on Scotland's People website....with the 1851 coming.......sometime.....
Now...what age was Andrew in 1883 and where was he living at that time....and was he born in Scotland or Ireland?? Were his parents living or dead in 1883? Did he have any siblings mentioned?....Was he married?
At the moment I'm just looking for Andrew in the 1881 census.........
Best wishes
Jean

As you can see I'm a novice at this, Andrew was either born in Ireland as well or in Lanark county. He was age 70 on his death cert in 1884, he was at the Motherwell poorhouse then, his parents were deceased. He was married to Bridget Campbell she passed away in 1874, they had at least 4 children, William, James, Hugh and Margaret, the children were all born in county Lanark. I did try the Scotlandspeople website, I didnt find them, I did find quite a few McMenemy members however, It is an amazing tool!!
I thank you for your time and effort, regards, Karen

Hi Karen
Thanks for the additional info.....given that this surely must be Andrew in 1881.......with his son Hugh
Dwelling: 5 Thompsons Square
Census Place: Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203621 GRO Ref Volume 628 EnumDist 17 Page 30
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Hugh MC MENEMY M 36 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Coalminer
Grace MC MENEMY M 25 F Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Andrew MC MENEMY W 68 M Ireland
Rel: Father
Occ: Coalminer (Unemployed)
and it looks like Andrew was born in Ireland. It's very possible that his parents never came to Scotland. My own research has lines from Ireland that I know parents names but no records of them in Scotland can be found.
Best wishes
Jean

Re Andrew McMenemy & Bridget Campbell
Hi Karen and Jean,
Seems Andrew & Bridget probably didn't arrive in Glasgow till after 1841 - they may of course have been in another area.
Here's the basics from the 1851 & 1861 censuses. Sorry no more details [now added], and slight difference in name 1851.

&

Jean,
Thank you for looking, that is surely him, I know his son Hugh was married to Grace Donnelly. When I tried to find Andrew on earlier census records, I had no luck, I know my great grandfather (Andrew's son) James is listed on the 1891 census as being 40 and born in Wishaw, which tells me at least his mother Bridget Campbell-McMenemy must have been in Scotland in @1851, same for his brother William he was born @1849.
I wonder if you would check the earlier reports for me.
This is so exciting, I swear I probably wont sleep much tonight, I know those wheels will be turning all night!! Let me know if you dig up anything else.
Kind Regards,
Karen

Jack, Thank you for stepping in, I am so elated to learn this about them. I know its going to be next to impossible to find them in Ireland, There is a McMenemy.org website that has the family stemming from County Tyrone, and also County Donegal, I do have at tleast that to start with! It must be the wee hours for you dear Jack! I am going to relay your information to my cousin in Cambuslang, she has been a tremendous help with research there.
Thank you again, you're a doll!!!
good night and best regards,
Karen

Hi Karen
Glad we could help you a little bit. I can't take all the credit though....Jack will come out and beat me up if I do....
I've looked for an OPR marriage between Andrew and Bridget and so far....nada. At least now you know that they both were born in Ireland. They might just have married there before coming to Scotland.
Best wishes

I believe you're right, Im just so thrilled to have gone back as far as him, I will keep trying, who knows, I was just given a piece of information on my mohters side, on the 1930 census, in Pennsylvania, my grandfather Giacomo Santilli was recorded as Tim Sandall, so I'm sure McMenemy could have been reported as any number of things, and transcribed incorrectly who know's.
Im so glad I stumbled upon this website, It is just wonderful, I've been looking at all the other posts, it is a plethera of infomation, and great fun!!
I'm sure I'll be "seeing and talking" to you soon,
bye for now,
Karen
