1901 census Robert Harper .....
In the 1901 census I have a Robert Harper age 7 born Lasswade Midlothian, described as "grandson" with David and Jane (Harper) Downie in Kinross.
Before she married in 1880 Jane had 2 illegitimate children, Jane born Lasswade in 1870 and George born Cleish 1874.
My problem is I can't find a birth in Lasswade for a Robert Harper to fit this timescale.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: 1901 census Robert Harper
In other words, the daughter Jane's surname was DOWNIE, in which case try searching under that surname instead of HARPER.garibaldired wrote:In the 1901 census I have a Robert Harper age 7 born Lasswade Midlothian, described as "grandson" with David and Jane (Harper) Downie in Kinross.

1901 Robert harper
David,
Done a search on Downie but there's nothing. As a matter of interest both Jane and George appear in censuses as Harper and George married as a Harper. They don't appear to have lived with the Downies; staying in the family home.

David Downie/Jane Harper
I have just joined this site, and have a fair amount of information on David Downie. This is a transcript of his death entry:
1905 Deaths in the Parish of Kinross in the County of Kinross, Page 13, #38:
David Downie, scavenger, married to (1) Ann Haxton (2) Jane Harper, died on 18 Nov 1905 at 5:15 am at 11 Sluiceburn, Kinross, age 75. His parents were David Downie, gasworks labourer, deceased, and Christina Downie, maiden surname Dow, deceased. Cause of death was disease of bladder, exhaustion. The informant was Nellie Downie, daughter, present. [I have a copy of the death certificate.]
I have traced him back to his grandparents, David Downie and Helen (Nelly) Henderson, who were married in Orwell, Kinross, on 30 Dec 1791 (IGI),

Hi Jill,
It's good to meet you here!
Thank you very much for that information about David Downie. As you have probably gathered from the above posts (and others elsewhere!) my interest is the Harpers. David's second wife, Jane, was my great grandmother's sister.
Jane herself outlived David by some years; she died in hospital in Perth
aged 85 on 13 November 1932. The death certificate gives her usual residence as 11 Sluiceburn Kinross.
Presumably your interest is in the Downies?
Jane Harper, the illegitimate daughter of Jane later Downie is working in Edinburgh at the same place as Helen Downie (aged 41) in the 1901 census. This Helen seems to have been the daughter of Andrew and Anne Downie ms Brown. At the time of Helen's birth he was hostler at the Salutation hotel in Kinross. Does this fit with what you know?
Thanks again for the info.
Best wishes,
Meg

Downies in Kinross
Hi Meg
Yes, my interest is in the Downies - my late mother's maiden name. Thank you so much for your reply.
I don't have the 1901 census entry re Jane and Helen working at the same place. This is very interesting, because as far as I can work out, Jane Harper's husband David Downie and Helen Downie were not related. In 1881, Helen was a pupil teacher, living with her parents in Burntisland, Fife. Andrew Downie, Helen's father, was the brother of my great-grandfather, Archibald Downie. His wife Anne Brown was born in England. My Downies originated in Fife, and there were lots of David Downies. Perhaps there might be a connection from way back.
I have a large number of Downies on my database, available to anyone who is interested.
Could you please send me a transcript of the 1901 census entry? My email address is jillm@iafrica.com
Best wishes, Jill
