Unusual Spelling .....

Post by Jean Jeanie » Thu Dec 15, 2005 6:08 pm

Just to show how many of us fail to find our relies in the censuses!

I am transcribing for Freecen and thought I would show you how the enumerators made life difficult for us.

Christian names:-

Margaret, Margrit, Margrat, Margret.

Henry, Hendry, Henrie, Hendrie.

The biggest howler in the surnames is:-

Barron, Barren, Barran which in turn could look like Barrow, Barrew, Barraw. I opted for the name ending in "n" as I have never come across a Barrew or Barraw. This one by the same enumerator in the same family!

We have to transcribe "as is" even if we know it to be wrong.

Anyone looking for Margaret Barron in the 1841 has a trying time ahead of them.
