26 George Street Glasgow 1901 and 1954 .....

Hello all,

Anybody know if there was anything special at this address in 1901 and 1954. I've checked the Mitchell online street search and it looks like old slum area's. The reason I ask - I have two people from completely different sides of my family living at this address 53 years apart

Seems a bit of a long shot - the 1901 person is there living in the census and the other in 1954 died in the Royal Infirmary but usual address was given as 26 George Street.....

I have also been curious about George St as my Grand Father Thomas Turnbull Watson's birth place was 17 George St 1885 his parents were supposed to have been married 2yrs previously in Scarborugh his father was a comedian/actor, I don't know if they were there in 1901 though .
He next shows up present on his mother Jessie's death cert 1909 in Galston Ayrshire she is widow of Thomas and married to another actor by that time .
Can I also take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy Christmas
and a ' Guid New Year' when it comes and also congratulations to the Talking Scot Group on reaching its 1st birthday (well done)

The Mitchell library has the Glasgow voters roll, you could check the address back to the early 1900's.
I believe that the roll goes back to 1912 in book form and there are fiches for earlier years.

I'll try and get a look at this, just seems a bit spooky 2 people renting the same house 50 years apart...but hey, stranger things have happened I suppose.

There appears to be over 100 tenanted properties at 26 George Street. My guess is that it may be a lane off George Street, at number 26. They all appear to be tenants of The Trustees of Archibald Watson. There is a plumber's business "Archibald Watson" at number 36 George Street, presumably the landowner of number 26 and more.

So the people at 26 George Street 50 years apart did not necessarily live in the same house.

Hi Nelmit,

It's the first place I usually look when I get an address but so far I've never had an address to match. Directly next door and directly across the road is as near as I've come yet although they do give you a great idea of what the area were like.
