Post by dmcsween » Thu Dec 29, 2005 10:17 pm

Hello Everyone. Is it possible to acces the 1841 census of Kirkcudbright online? I would like to look up James Hunter born 1821 Kirkbean. Thanks, Diane

Hi Diane
I have been looking in that area for months and haven't found much census material on-line -yet! Coming soon is the promise from scotlandspeople.
The 1851 is available in a very useful form for the whole of the Dumfries area at www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx

Good luck with the search

Hope the board don't mind a wee plug for a family history society, it is the Dumfries and Galloway FHS http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/

The area today known as Dumfries and Galloway formerly comprised the separate Scottish counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire.

Click on Pubications on the side bar, then on census booklets. you will see they have all the 1841 census areas covered in Kirkcudbrightshire in booklets, most are priced for less than £2 plus p&p.
You will need to know what part of Kirkcudbrightshire your person came from such as Anwoth or Balmaclellan and so on.
I have had some of the booklets for areas in Wigtownshire for many years now and have found most of my family members from the area in them.

Hi Alan,

A plug for the FHS's is no problem, as they are voluntary organisations with interests in common with TalkingScot. All the Scottish FHS's that I can find are listed on TalkingScot's "Societies" page at http://www.talkingscot.com/links/fhs-links.htm

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
