I need someone to identify a parish in Aberdeen please

Post by Anjo » Sat Jan 14, 2006 2:04 pm

Hi to all,

I have just found a rellie of mine living in Wales but born in Scotland and he gives his birth place as Parish of dau/dan/daw. Aberdeen but I haven't a clue as to where that be or what it might be... Anyone I have talked to draws a blank too, but maybe its Old Deer... Have been trying to imagine a scots man telling a welsh man where he was born.

Any of you wise things out there shed some light on this matter for me.
Its piece RG13/5184 page 20 if you want to look for yourselves.

I have just applied for his marriage cert today so hopefully might find out his fathers name and then be able to find him on the 1871 when he was 1 and find which parish he was in then. But until then I thought someone might help me now as I am impatient.!!

Thanks and all the best Anjo

Hi

If you go to www.anesfhs.org.uk. Go to the bottom of the page and click on Aberdeen Parishes, you will get a list of all the parishes in Aberdeen.

The only likely one, I think, is Daviot

Thanks Jean,

I have looked on there and I am still none the wiser... just thought someone researching Aberdeenshire might have a clue. Doing research in England I found that someplaces are called one thing officially and another by the locals.. so thought that this might be the case here or...... that the enumerater was having trouble with the Scots accent.

Thanks for your time and trouble.

Angela.

Hi again,

His name was Alexander Charles Robertson and I have only been able to find him on the 1901. He was married in Rhayander in 1898 and thats the only way I was able to find him on that census. Where he was for the 1891 or 1881 I don't know but I would presume he was still in Scotland (Aberdeen) in 1871 as he was born abt 1870

Angela

I had a look for him on the 1881. Unfortunatley there are 29 Alexander Robertsons b. 1870 +/- 1 year in Aberdeen.

When you find his parents names that will be a big help.

All I can tell you is that all the Alexander Robertsons mentioned above were still in Scotland in 1881. None had moved to Wales.

Thanks Jean for taking a look.....I thought as much as on the IGI there is over 30 possible chr for Aberdeen.

I'll just have to wait till I get his marriage cert and work from that.

How fustrating.

All the best and thanks for everything.

Hello Anjo,

You won't be sure till get the cert and I know nothing about Aberdeen but the search result for Alexander on the 1901 census says he was born in Parish Old Dam, Aberdeen. Between that and what you saw I wondered if it could be Old Don (a term for Old Aberdeen).

Then I saw this on the 1881 census.

Dwelling: 48 High St
Census Place: Aberdeen Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203447 GRO Ref Volume 168-2 EnumDist 2 Page 14
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Douglas ROBERTSON W 52 M Abdn, Aberdeen, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Jobbing Gardener
Alexr. ROBERTSON 12 M Old Abdn, Aberdeen, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
William ROBERTSON 10 M Old Abdn, Aberdeen, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
George ROBERTSON 7 M Old Abdn, Aberdeen, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Mary ROBERTSON 5 F Old Abdn, Aberdeen, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
Mary DAVIDSON U 31 F Alford, Aberdeen, Scotland

Probably wishful thinking but it will keep you going till the cert. arrives.

Haven't found them on the IGI yet mind you.

I've had a look at the image of the original and it looks far more like Old Don than Old Deer to me. The full place of birth is given as Parish of Old Don, Aberdeen. You're lucky to get that much detail - it usually just says Scotland! (And the Superintendent Registrar has added the occasional note to some of the entries so that for this paricular entry, under the column 'If 1) Deaf and Dumb 2) Blind 3) Lunatic 4) Imbecile, feeble-minded', is the simple statement 'Scot'

If it's any help, he doesn't appear to be in Wales in 1891 but there are 4 entries in England in 1891 for an Alexander Robertson born Scotland in 1870 +/- 1 so if you can't find him in Scotland it would be worth looking at these.

thanks Mary,

I have seen the transcript and thought it was old Dau or dan but have already been informed that it is Old don which is a term for old Aberdeen. There are too many Alexanders on other census to be certain of the right one until I find get the marriage cert and find out fathers name.

Thanks for all your help

Angela.
