abbey poor house Paisley william Oliver 3rd edition.....

Post by maggie » Wed Jan 18, 2006 11:41 am

Hello
i have a William Oliver who died in Abbey poor house Paisley on 11th march 1879 aged 77 a ships builder carpenter widower of -------------- and parents --------------- :( the informant was a George Muir inmate .
the interesting thing is that the two other deaths recorded on the certificate also died in Abbey poor house and the informant was a George Muir inmate but the parents details are recorded for the other two poor souls .
So what i am looking for is any information whatsoever on William Oliver in poor relief records if any exists like the admission date to the poor house .any help would be appreciated
kind regards maggie
ps this is the same William Oliver in my previous posts where he was living in largs with a wife Jane shearer

Hi Maggie,

If you go to the SOURCES link at the top of the page you'll find a site about Poor Houses which has info on the Abbey Poor House.

Also your best bet for the actual records would be to contact the Mitchell Library ( see LIBRARIES link for their e-mail address) as they have the records of the Renfrewshire poor relief applications.

Good luck!

Hello Caroline
thankyou for your reply
i have just had a look at Abbey poor house i just hope that William was spared some of the ardous tasks mentioned in the article given his advanced years but most likely not it seems to have been a very strict system they had in operation to discourage would be inmates. How very sad ....
thanks once again
regards maggie

Maggie,

I don't think 'The Mitchell' holds Paisley Poorhouse records but I'll have a look next time I'm there. If not I'm sure someone else will look at the Paisley records. If his parents have not been recorded on his death entry then I would think that means that the info was not given on the application.

Meanwhile here they are in 1841 (Courtesy of FREECEN) in case you don't have it.

See under the Libraries tab on this site for details of the Paisley library. I seem to recall reading somewhere that these records are guarded very carefully by the librarians and that it's not easy to get access to them.

Hi David,
The good staff at the library do guard them well - in the sense that they take care of them.
Access difficulty at times is because many of the books are held in storage away from the library - and these need to be "ordered in".
The reason being that athough the library have the name indexes (many statement books too), there just isn't enough room for them all.
Most of these books are about 18"x15"x4" - so not exactly paperback size!
Jack
ps. Maggie was this one i'd forgotten? I'll have a look before i go to the RFHS meeting tonight.

Hello Annette David & Jack
thankyou for your replys
Annette thanks for the 1841 info prehaps he was in such a state of ill health that they just took him in without too many questions being charitable( he died of bronchitis)was it common to have inmates as the informant :? on others i have seen it was the inspector of the poor.
William it would seem appears to have been on poor relief in various areas a while ago i found some Olivers who's names looked familiar like catherine,William,Elizabeth& Archibald who's application i have thanks to you Jack in the Ayrshire poor relief database via the libraries page on site and i contacted Ardrossan Librarygiving the frame numbers what i received was copies of the register book giving name place of residence and weekly ammounts paid which are wonderfull to have but left me wanting more  like the actual applications that contain all the nitty gritty stuff that give you a real insight into their lives unfortunatly it would seem that these have sadly not survived the passage of time (i tried Rothsay/Bute archives too as one entry i have for him is in Millport.
Finding more info on William or Catherine (i am assuming that she was married to Williams brother)would seem to be my only way back to

finding who my Olivers where /came from .
thankyou once again for your help
kind regards maggie
p.s Jack to answer your question hmn.....yes but it's fully understandable your head must be buzzing with all the different names that you look at for all the people that you help and i for one am truly gratefull enjoy your meeting

Hi Maggie,
Alas, nothing for William. I now do remember looking for him before, but i'd obviously forgotten to say; sorry about this.
As Annette mentioned, even if there was a record then most unlikely parents' names would've been recorded on it.
There were a couple of other OLIVERs;
--
George OLIVER, collier (65) b Kilmarnock. Applied 1887. Spouse Isabella BAIRD (63).
Parents - George OLIVER & Agnes PATON.
--
James Speirs OLIVER, labourer (18 ) b Paisley. Applied 1897. Single.
Parents - James OLIVER & Unknown.
--
Quite a few folk who died in the Abbey, Paisley, or Glasgow Poorhouses aren't mentioned in the name indexes.
There doesn't seem to be any good reason for this, but some statements are missing.
Always the very, very slim chance they were missed out when the indexes were made up.
(it would take years though to go through every book to see if they were...)
