Andrew and the Govan Poorhouse.....

Post by angel » Sat Jan 21, 2006 2:30 pm

Hello Everyone

These are the details of my 2 x great grandparents one of whom died in Govan Poorhouse.

Annie Queen m.s Townsley died 17 March 1903 at 176 Nairn Street Glasgow and her husband Andrew Queen died 16 Feb. 1904 in Govan Poorhouse former residence 179 Nairn Street Glasgow.

Between the 17 March 1904 and up to his death on 16 February 1904 Andrew or a member of the family would have to had made an application for poor relief.

I would like to know who made the application and when it was made also what they said about him.

Many thanks in advance
Heather

Hello Heather,

I will have another look but I'm sure I have looked for this one before and there was no application in the index. I think I looked under Andrew and his 3 children's names - John, Issac and Annie.

Hi Annette

Thanks for going to look his wfe died 17 March 1903 and as far as I am aware you can't get into the poorhouse unless you make an application for poor relief and if they don't offer you money they may offer you a place in the poorhouse ( I could be wrong). His daughter-in-law Mary Swan (married to Isaac) signed his death cert so she made the applicationon his behalf as Andrew couldn't write.

Hello Heather,

Looked again today and still no luck with Andrew or Annie but there is one for Mary Swan/Queen who was born in 1869 - she applied in 1897.
As I said to Nina there was no production today in the archives but if you think it may help I will have a look next time.

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette

You have got me so curious now she is the daughter-in-law who signed Andrew's death cert and my great grand mother. She married Isaac Queen son of Andrew born Belfast Ireland about 1866.

Please could you look i would be ever so much in your debt.

Hi Heather

Can't help with your rellie but Govan Poorhouse is now the Southern General Hospital!
Originally it was called Merryflats so the name might help when searching for records.
The contact address for The Mitchell Library was on another thread and they are the most likely place to hold the records.
Hope it helps

Hello Heather,

Here is Mary's application made in 23.7.1897 (D HEW 17/429 26787)

Daughter of Andrew Swan a waiter, Robertson Street, Anderston and Jean Templeton, dead.

Married 1/5/1885 at 5 Abbotsford Pl. by A. Leiper.

Husband - Issac Queen, hammerman age 31 years b. 29.7.1866 at Cumber, Co. Down, Ireland. Protestant.
Son of Andrew Queen a labourerand Annie Townsley both at 7 Surrey Street.
Husband was sentenced on 20th inst. to 30 days for assaulting applicant.

Family - Janet b. 25.5.1887, Greenside Lane
Jeanie b. 26.4.1889, 20 Polmadie Street
Annie b. 4.6.1891. 7 Surrey Street

Andrew b. 21.7.1895 ditto

In present house 3 months

Prior 7 Surrey Street, 5 years.

Pregnant 5 months.

She was found drunk a couple of weeks later  and then Issac came home in September.

1929 was the last application made.

Although it was not extensive the record was quite clearly written and would be worth ordering a copy.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hello Annette

You are an O:)

That is some report although there is not a lot it contains a whole heap of :o ing information

Many thanks for the report I would love to order it but I don't know how to go about doing it. Any help with how to send away for the record would be appreciated.

You have given me my first criminal in the family  and I know know when to look for Andrew Swan's death.

Mary would have been expecting their daughter Amelia who was born 1898.
