A pier...somewhere, probably England - any thoughts? .....

Post by LesleyB » Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:47 pm

I've had a good look on the web at dozens of piers but I haven't found one with this type of 3 legged construction. It could be anywhere, and its a long shot, but...does anyone recognise it?

Only clues: Bride was originally from North Yorkshire, couple were married in Rotherfield, Greys, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire 1921 & then they seemed to have lived in Henley.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley

Have you looked at Cromer Pier ? It seems to be 3 legged and has the criss crosses going accross it :!: :D

Tracey

The only other ones i can see that are like this are Mumbles, Aberystwyth and Saltburn Piers
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Pier

Hi Lesley

I think this definitely looks like Saltburn Pier. As this is in North Yorkshire I suppose it is possible. Maybe she came home for a visit after her weddding.

Well done Linda Mc & Tracey!
The construction looks similar - I think you are correct with Saltburn!

Many thanks

Having had time to have a closer look now at Saltburn on Google images I'm just not sure.
Although the proportions, the triple support and angle of the "legs" at Saltburn look pretty similar, the Saltburn pier appears ( ) not to have criss-cross bits on the bottom half, whereas the one in the old photo clearly does...

I don't think it can be mumbles - it seems to have a "four legs making a square" kind of support. Apologies to any structural engineers!

I've not found a clear enough picture or Aberystwyth to be able to tell one way or another but it seems to have pairs of legs not triple supports.

Hi Lesley

Try having a look at the picture of Saltburn Pier on this website
http://www.flickr.com/photos/locust/ Where it says search by tag enter Saltburn. What do you think?
