McMENAMIN / McGRAA

Post by jennovo » Wed Jan 25, 2006 3:14 pm

Hi all,

Am also researching the surnames MCGRAA or MCGRAW in Cumberland (and elsewhere). I have started a database for this surname.
Also McMENAMIN - Ireland (possibly Carrickmore) to New South Wales.

Hi Cathy,

I don't know if I will be ever able to make a link with Ireland beyond what I already have. I have been at it for years and have gathered a mass of information, and rellies, here in Australia but nothing more for overseas.

Following is my Irish story:
John McMenamin born abt. 1835 in Tyrone (the name Karman was written on immigration records and it has been suggested this is a pet name for Carrickmore) father James McMenamin mother Margaret McAnulty. At some stage John travelled to the United States. He married Alice Hazzard (Hassett) in Philadelphia abt 1857. Two children, Mary Ellen and James were born in County Mercer, New Jersey. The third child, John was born back in Tyrone. The family emigrated and arrived in Sydney, Australia 1864. They settled in Saint Patrick Plains Shire (Singleton) in NSW where they had several more children.

When John arrived in Sydney he brought with him a younger sister, Margaret. He also had an older sister, Hannah, living with an uncle in Sydney. Both Mary and Hannah died in Sydney, Hannah at St. Vincent's Hospital and Margaret at Woolloomooloo. They both lived within the city central.

When John died his son Thomas gave his grandparents surnames as Hugh McMenamin and Mary McQuade - maybe he was remembering great grandparents as I am sure John would have been correct on his immigration papers. All the above names are common around Dromore in Ireland, but that is just guess work.

Any bells ringing for you? I would love to find living relatives in Ireland.

Jen.

Hi Jen,
thanks for reply. No bells ringing I'm afraid.

John died 1900, Glasgow.
Mary died 1929 near Glasgow.
Thomas - death unknown, but found his son Charles on Ellis Island site.
Anne - death unknown, but found her on 1880 census, Pennsylvania.
Catherine - death unknown.

No trace of death of parents Peter and Catherine in Scotland.
