Hello Everyone,
Need some new ideas on this one.
My g grandfather, William George Reid, stated on his marriage cert that he was born in Tranent, East Lothinan (a grand daughter of the line says she thought he was born in Glasgow) and the age he gave (also on his death cert) would have him being born in 1867/68. He gave his parents as David Reid and Catherine Hogg, who I can see married in Tranent in 1866. The cousin says he and his parents emigrated to New Zealand when William was about 10 years, stayed about a year, and came on to NSW, Australia. I can find no birth for William, nor immigration record for William and his parents.
I also find siblings of his father very elusive: David Thompson Reid IGI 15 April 1845 parents James Reid and Catherine Nimmo.
Can anyone help me? I keep going back to it, and go round in the same circles.
Thank you,
Jen.

Hi,
Have you tried to find them on a relevant census ?
1871 perhaps would have them - then see what his parents said for his birth place. Often people think they were born in the first place they remember living and that may not be accurate.
If they went to NZ first then Aus. would they still be considered immigrants or would that make a difference.

Thank you Wilma & Annette,
The census information is terrific. I did have the first census but could not find David's brothers and sisters. This sure looks like the twins though I will never be able to pronounce the surname - anyone ever heard of this surname??? The twins middle names were Gilchrist and Thomson, Thomson was also the middle name of David.
I still despair of finding any information re: my g. grandfather William George Reid. He was 92 to when he died and I was 8 so I remember him well.
Yes Wilma it is possible that the family just drifted across from New Zealand. There are documented movements between the two countries in Victoria but I can find nothing there for this family, and I can find no records in NSW.
Keep ideas coming please. Thank you.
