Free CEN .....

Post by Lizzie » Fri Feb 10, 2006 5:39 pm

Hello All,

Whilst like you all, waiting for the 1851 census (also the next massive snowfall) I passed the time away this morning by going into Free Cen for the first time in weeks and was much surprised to find my ggg grandfather, Flour Merchant of Haughs in Keith in the 1841 census. He was 65 and with his brother Alexander and others. I then clicked to next door and here in another house on the farm are five other men who were workers on the farm. For me this was a great find as all I knew of this James George is he was born in 1775.

The last time I looked here there was nothing of these people of whom I speak. I would like to thank all who were/are involved in this project for all their time and effort in letting us search this wonderful site for free.

I check back to them and FreeBMD every month or so. It seems in the pasy eyar, a lot has been added as more volunteers are found. I just found a marriage record that had been bothering me for awhile and it opened all sorts of new doors.

They are a fantastic group of volunteers.

Hi All

Please keep checking Freecen regularly. When I "joined up" as a transcriber late last year, there was nothing on Freecen for Morayshire. Just look at it now :D

Bellie 1851 will be sent off in the next few days for checking and then it's on to Kinloss.

Thank you Jean, I was not aware we had anyone here working on it.
Now do you know how far along they are on Ross and Cromarty. I am waiting for a clue as to my Macrae's whereabouts in 1841.

You are all doing a wonderful job.

Hi Lizzie

Click on the following link

http://www.freewebs.com/mmjeffery/index.htm

You can then select any county and check on the status of each year/parish.

Hope your Ross and Cromarty is coming on fine.

Hi All

Volunteers are always required. It is a mammoth task.

If you are interested in a particular area/parish, why not take a look at the site and see what is still outstanding. You may be able to help yourself and others by becoming a transcriber.

There's no pressure and the information to be transcribed is supplied on CD. Very interesting reading the "old writing"

I find it very enjoyable and therapeutic. It gives you an insight as to what they were doing, size of families, and the size of the area they lived in etc.

If I hit a brick wall with my lot then I start transcribing, knowing that this will help others break theirs down

I am also a transcriber for freecen, my project was 1851 Port Glasgow 1 & 2, also the checking for Inchinnan 1851.

Very interesting and rewarding.

Hello Kathy,
As stated in previous posts you are all to be congratulated.

I now wonder if the transcriptions are completed for Edinburgh and Aberdeen. I try each day for both places and the people I search are not there, especially Edinburgh.

The transcribers who do all this for freecen are to be admired especially as 1841 Banffshire is the most complete ! . The one thing that does let this site down though is what ever "server" it uses. When its good its good but more often than not it is the most infuriating site. Today i tried constantly for an hour and only one of my searches delivered a result - the reason was "web site not responding" not the other one of " busy server" and this is a regular occurance.
Will this problem be sorted out eventually ?
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings
