Hants. England Cant find parents of Robert Phillips .....

Post by Oran » Sat Feb 11, 2006 4:54 pm

I am trying to locate the mother and father of Robert Phillips, and possibly thier hometown.
Robert Phillips aged 36 years married Elizabeth Macpherson aged 34 years, on 27th Novemeber 1856.
In the town of Fort William, Kilmalie parish, county of Argyle. Scotland.

Both were resident in the Fort William area, Robert Phillips worked as a Labourer,
and Elizabeth Macpherson worked as a servants maid.

Robert Phillips born abt. 1820 was the son of a ships carpenter also a Robert Phillips and mother Elizabeth Negus.

Incidentally, on Robert Phillips b. 1820 appears to have stayed and died in Scotland after his marriage, and died in 1882, and his father is listed as a Shipwright on his death entry.

1851 Census entry find staying with a Shepard Family in remote area of Loch Arkaig, listed as shoemaker, born Hants, England.

1851 Census Loch Arkaig/Kilmalie info:

John Angus head 24 Sheppard Roxborough
Christine wife 28
John Angus son 3
James Angus son 17 months
Jane Cameron hse servant 20
Alain Scott sheepsherd 23
Robert Phillips shoemaker 30 Hants, England.

The family home (England, Hants) has not yet been located or indentified,

I thought possibly the Isle of Wight, however this Robert Phillips was claimed by a IOW FHS member as thier G.G. Grandad.

I also thought I had possibly found Robert Phillips in Portsea, and thought this might fit, as his father is listed as ships carpenter on Roberts marriage cert. However, wrong again, this Robert Phillips appears to stay in Hampshire as a Blacksmith.

Can anyone help please? I would be grateful for any information.

Hi

I've searched for Robert Phillips b 1820 in the 1881 census. Found your Blacksmith in Hants. Can't find him in Scotland in 1881. What was his occupation on his d.c.?

There should be corresponding certificates on ScotlandsPeople for them.

Hello Jean Jeanie,

Thank-you very much for searching, Robert Phillips b. abt. 1820 England, Hants. is listed as agricultural labourer on most of the census finds I have for him, however in later life, and on his death entry his occupation is listed as Shipyard Nightwatchman.

The Robert Phillips the Blacksmith you found in Portsea, I have already investigated with the help of some collegues from a chatroom, and a friend in Hampshire, and seem Unable to slot my Robert Phillips in here, as the Robert Phillips the Blacksmith seems to stay in hampshire.

You can view the findings below....

Hello AndrewP,

Thank-you also for searching, much appreciated, yes this the correct Robert Phillips aged 61 years living with his Son John Phillips.

I am curious Robert Phillips seems to be found without his wife Elizabeth Phillips nee Mcpherson, who has not been found in the 1881 census, however, Elizabeth was found in the 1891 census, and had reverted back to her maiden name, living in East Shaw Street, Greenock. with two Grandaughters staying with her. (Elizabeth also not been found in 1851 census)

Thank-you for also finding two of the issues listed below, much appreciated Andrew, I do have these along with ELIZABETH PHILLIPS 1855 Kilmallie, & ROBERT PHILLIPS 1850.

JOHN PHILLIPS - Birth: 22 FEB 1857 Kilmallie, Argyll
MARYANN PHILLIPS - Birth: 03 JUN 1859 Kilmallie, Argyll

Incidentally, I would extremeley interested to know where this Robert Phillips b. 1850 was born, as there is a anonomly, with this Robert, I will try to explain. The family is found in the 1861 census below, but when we next find them in 1871 census for Killmallie, Alexander is no longer listed?

1861 Census Fort William Area - Inverness-shire Scotland Page 5 - MALL

PARISH PLACE HOUSE FNAME SURNAME SEX RELSHIP MARRIED AGE OCCUPATION BIRTHPLACE

MALL STRONE 2 ROBERT PHILIP M HEAD M 41 AG.LAB. ENGLAND
MALL STRONE 2 ELIZABETH PHILIP F WIFE M 45 KILMUIR
MALL STRONE 2 ALEXANDER PHILIP M SON U 12 SCHOLAR KILMUIR
MALL STRONE 2 ELIZABETH PHILIP F DAUR U 6 SCHOLAR KILMALIE
MALL STRONE 2 JOHN PHILIP M SON U SCHOLAR 4 KILMALIE

Source of information: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... llcen.html

The 1871 census Kilmallie reads....

ROBERT PHILLIPS 51 LABOURER ENGLAND
ELIZABETH PHILLIPS 51
ROBERT PHILLIPS 22 CARTER KILAMLLIE
JOHN PHILLIPS 14 SCHOLAR KILAMLLIE
MARY ANN PHILLIPS 11 SCHOLAR KILAMLLIE

So it seems Alexander disappears, and a Robert is listed in the next census, maybe this is Alexander but his name is changed to Robert?

Sorry! I am digressing, back to Robert Phillips b. abt. 1820 England, Hants.
It is ideally the family in Hampshire I would like to locate, I just dont know if this will be possible, time will tell, many thanks for taking time to reply, and would appreciate any suggestions or thoughts.
