I am trying to find out the wife's birthplace of this couple in Beith, Ayrshire:
Robert Stewart and wife Margaret (Wilson) married Dec. 1864 in Beith. Both were born about 1844. I read the entire 1851 Beith census and cannot find Margaret. Robert is there age 7. I need to know which Margaret Wilson is the right one. There are a number of Margaret Wilsons born around that same time in various towns nearby.
Thanks!

1871 1881 Beith Census
Thanks for your reply. I must not have made myself clear that I was hoping someone could tell me from the census of 1871 or 1881 what Margaret Wilson Stewart's birthplace was. The "census of 1871 and 1881 in Beith" was in the Subject of my original query.

Hello bjs and Welcome!
I'm quite sure this is the right family from the 1881 census:
Dwelling: 21 Benquhat
Census Place: Dalmellington, Ayr, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203594 GRO Ref Volume 586 EnumDist 3 Page 14

Robert STEWART M 37 M Beith, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Iron Miner
Margaret STEWART M 36 F Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Wife
John STEWART 13 M Beith, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son

Peter STEWART 11 M Beith, Ayr, Scotland

Jessie STEWART 8 F Beith, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Daur

Archibald STEWART 6 M Beith, Ayr, Scotland

Rel: Daur
Thomas ARMSTRONG U 38 M Johnstone, Renfrew, Scotland

Occ: Iron Miner
Thomas CONNELL U 28 M Johnstone, Renfrew, Scotland

A crosscheck of a parent search on the IGI gives the following births to Robert Stewart and Margaret Wilson:
PETER STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 05 NOV 1869 Beith, Ayr, Scotland
ANN STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 30 JUN 1865 Beith, Ayr, Scotland
AGNES CAMERON STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 17 FEB 1872 Beith, Ayr, Scotland
JOHN STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 19 OCT 1867 Beith, Ayr, Scotland
ARCHIBALD STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 FEB 1874 Beith, Ayr, Scotland
Of course the IGI only conatins births til 1874 so all the youngest kiddies from the 1881 won't be listed here. You'll have to decide whether some died young or were elsewhere on 1881 census night.
The birthplace though of this Margaret Wilson is stated as Dalry, Ayrshire.
Best wishes
Jean

Dear Jean,
Thank you so much!! I am so very pleased with this information. I had put off further work on this, because I knew I had to plow through a later census to find Margaret Wilson. You must know the time this saves for me! And you made it so easy! I always get so excited when another mystery is solved.
Do you know why the county Ayr is not included on the 1881 census on the LDS site? Now I can look in Dalry for Margaret. You've made my day!
You're from the U.S.--where? I live in a suburb of Denver CO.
Thank you,
Barbara

Hello Barbara
Glad to be of assistance!
As a matter of fact I do know why Ayr is not on the LDS site....and I think you'll find none of Scotland is on the LDS site in their 1881 census. You can only access the Scottish records through the pay per view ScotlandsPeople website. Oddly enough though the records that you view that way are a duplicate of the indexing that was done by the LDS
Scotland has the market cornered on their census and Statutory records and the only place you'll find them online is through SP (ScotlandsPeople). I find it much more economical to purchase the 1881 census on cds from the LDS people. You being in Colorado are almost in their neighborhood!! Anyhow...I'm not trying to make a sales pitch for the LDS but if you look around the familysearch website you'll learn that the entire 1881 UK census (England, Scotland, and Wales) can you yours for a reasonable sum! It was this disk set that I obtained your answer from. So if you plan on sticking with this hobby for a bit you might want to consider the economics of it.
Yup I'm in the US...but a long way from you...Southern Maine were the mercury never beat the freezing mark all day and the wind is howling tonight with some of the most frigid air we've seen all winter. No snow...just darn cold! Brrrrrrrr!!!
Please come back and visit us often and if you have any more questions just yell!
Best wishes

The copyright for the 1881 census for Scotland has always remained with General Register Office Scotland (GROS).
Up to 3 or 4 years ago (can anyone be more precise?) it was possible to buy from LDS the 2 area CDs that cover Scotland as the 2-CD set for less than £10. For whatever reason this is no longer possible, but then the full 26 CD set with all the area CDs for England and Wales, plus the overall index, only costs a few pennies less than £30 last time I checked ($29.95 in the USofA).
I believe that LDS/GSU were not originally allowed in terms of their agreement with GROS to add their Scottish 1881 census index to the FamilySearch.org website.
From around a year or so ago, however, I believe that an updated agreement withdrew that restriction.
However, I have no knowledge of LDS/GSU's future intentions as regards the 1881 Scottish data.
Back at the beginning of the ScotlandsPeople site it was clearly stated that a re-indexing of the 1881 census would follow directly after all the other censuses had been made available.........
Or, at very least, it was clearly stated on the SP site that 1881 digitised images would be available "Winter 2003/Spring 2004", with every inference that such an imaging exercise would also involve a re-indexing, - I haven't checked the User Group minutes on a word by word basis !! (I'll happily email anyone who wants it, a capture from a contemporary "What's in the Database" screen on SP!!)
The current position with respect to 1881 images on SP is"No/(but information transcribed)" along with the comment in the minutes of the User Group meeting on 30th January 2006 as follows, -
"6. Plans for original images of 1881 census
The group asked about the status of the 1881 images. Paul reported that as transcriptions were available on line then this would be a fairly low priority, with 1851, 1841, OPR’s etc taking priority. Alan enquired about the timetable for the OPR’s. Paul replied that a fairly complex re-indexing process was taking place in India, but that we were hoping to have OPR’s on line before the end of 2006."
It should be therefore be noted that starting from a published objective of 1881 digitised images available Winter 2003/Spring 2004, there is now apparantly no planned date for the availability of these digitised images, along with a new index

1861 Beith census for Stewart
I got such a fine response at my last inquiry so I'm begging again. This time I need a lookup in the Beith 1861 census for John Stewart. I need to know his age. I am having a terrible time finding the right John Stewart. In 1861, he would be about 50 and born in Beith. I've found him in the 1841 and 1851 census with wife Janet (Cameron) born in Stewarton. There is a John Stewart born in Beith in 1806, 1807, 1808, 1810 - none in 1811. The closest one is the 1810 one, but the parent's and the children's names are all different with the names used for John and Janet's children and grandchildren. Furthermore, the William Stewart father is a shoemaker I believe. John Stewart was a coal miner as were most of his children and grandchildren. Maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on occupation and names. Is that as much a factor as I think it is?
Thanks,
Barbara Stewart

Can't help with 1861 but could this be him in 1881.
You should be able to confirm or not by daughter's marriage.
